Garth Brooks Double Live,
By Jmac76 "Janine" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Double Live (Audio CD)
Garth Brooks isn't your traditional and typical country singer. With music roots that go back to his love for Kiss when he was younger, it is obvious through this double live album that he tries to emulate what Kiss did on their own Double Live albums, and through their shows. And you know what, Garth succeeds.
Nothing about this double live album is dull. Garth shows through his music what a true performer he is, and you only need to listen to this album to understand why everyone raves about his showmanship. With classics that range from Friends in Low Places to newer songs such as The American Honky Tonk Bar association Garth brings a little rock to his country, and a little country to his rock, and he does it exceptionally well. Garth brings his own style to country. In each song he performs he speaks volumes with emotion. Songs like "We shall be free" touch the soul completely. Other songs such as "The American Honky Tonk-Bar Association" and his exceptional cover and redo of Aerosmith's "The Fever" has one tapping their foot along to the beat of the music. Whether he is being cocky and confident, or humble and tearful, through and through he brings emotion to the music, and it is heard not only through his voice, and the lyrics but through the crowd, and the atmosphere. Songs such as "The Thunder rolls" and "Friends in low places" are two songs, in which the extra verses can only be heard in concert and the response to those extra verses is enough to hear it. Garth's connection with his fans is obvious, and what is even more obvious is his own enjoyment at seeing how much his fans love his shows. And it wouldn't be right without Trisha Yearwood singing a duet with Garth, as she does on "Wild is the wind". This Cd is a must to all Garth fans. And for those who aren't Garth fans this is the album that will either make you one, or not. The best way to listen to this is to turn down the lights, turn up the music, close your eyes and let Garth take you there.

there's only one Garth,

Ten years ago, my aunt visited Fan Fair and came back all excited about this new artist by the name of Garth Brooks. Not being a country music fan myself, my reaction was (with a sneer) what on earth is a Garth? Since that time I have come to truely appreciate the diversity, range, and sincereity of the man and his music. This CD is really the next-best thing to being at a Garth concert. While some might feel that the "fans" detract from the music, all that noise is a big part of Garth "Live".As I listen to this CD, I get "goosebumps", my heart races and I shed a few tears to "The Dance","Unanswered Prayers", and "The River". Garth"s ability to connect with the people is what makes him the man, and star that he is. If you've never had the opportunity to see Garth,or want to perhaps "re-live"that feeling of being there--then this is the CD to own. Go Garth!

If you don't know Garth, you're missing out!,

I must have been under a rock all my life b/c only recently a friend of mine introduced me to Garth Brooks. I don't know why I was so against opening up to country music all these years, b/c this stuff is truly a pleasure to listen to!
A few years ago I was originally attracted to the genre b/c of Friends in Low Places. Now, I skip that song to hear the rest! This album is perfect! Garth's voice never falters, and the audience is obviously so pumped, it literally makes me smile with excitement. I wish I had been at the show. At the beginning of some songs, Garth lightly will strum a few chords of his guitar and the audience goes ballistic b/c they recognize what song is going to be played. This album doesn't only include all of Garth's greatest hits, performed beautifully, but it also has the added excitement of listening to the audience's reactions. This is a must purchase disc. Not just for Country fans, for anybody that can recognize good music!!

Garth Brooks is a superstar in the field of country music. This 2 CD collection has most of his greatest hits on it with songs like "If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Unanswered Prayers", "Rodeo", "To Make You Feel My Love", and "The Dance". Two special treats are the long versions of "The Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places". I am not a fan of live CD's and at times the audience sings over Garth which is annoying, but this is a good collection of Garth Brooks' best.

There's a reason why this is the highest selling live album of all time and why this is my favorite album of all time. There's just something about Garth live that is even better than his studio albums. The only thing I would add to this cd is his cover of "American Pie".

Very Good CD,

This is Garth at his peak, with songs like "The River" "Callin' Baton Rouge" and "Unanswered Prayers", being real highlights on the CD. There are some clunkers on it as well, such as the duet "Wild Is The Wind" with Trisha Yearwood (Funny how BOTH Garth and Trisha went down since they hooked up?) and "The Fever". This is actually the LAST good Garth Brooks CD (And although I have the boxed set, and "Sevens" this is only one I still listen to anymore). I only hope that Garth decides to come up with a quality CD, and can start to lead country back again

Strong live set from Garth,
By Ken "KC Music Fan" (Olathe, KS, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Double Live (Audio Cassette)
Garth Brooks' Double Live album(which I have on tape) is a strong collection of the superstar's concert performances. It starts out with Garth's bluegrassy, uptempo hit "Callin' Baton Rouge" on which Bela Fleck, who played banjo on the studio recording, makes a guest appearance. It ends with Garth's classic hit "The Dance", which has always been one of my favorite songs from Garth because of its positive message about life. In between are a bunch of Garth's classic hits performed live, plus several new songs. The best of the previously unreleased songs by Garth which appear here are "To Make You Feel My Love", from the soundtrack of the movie "Hope Floats"; "Wild As The Wind", with background vocals from Trisha Yearwood; "It's Your Song", which Garth dedicated to his late mom, Colleen; and "Tearin' It Up And Burnin' It Down", a funky, upbeat number from Garth and his songwriting buddies Kent Blazy and Kim Williams, the same songwriting team that produced Garth's huge hit "Ain't Goin' Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up". Of course, "Ain't Goin' Down" is on here, featuring Terry McMillan on harmonica. The lead guitar is awesome, but I think Terry practically steals the show. Speaking of uptempo songs, Garth has a lot of his best here. Besides "Callin' Baton Rouge" and "Ain't Goin' Down", my favorites are "Rodeo", "American Honky Tonk Bar Association", "The Fever", "We Shall Be Free", "Two Of A Kind, Workin' On A Full House", "Longneck Bottle", "Two Pina Coladas" and "Shameless". These are all well-done live performances.Garth's best ballads are on here, too--and "The Dance" isn't the only highlight. "Much Too Young To Feel This Damn Old", Garth's classic rodeo song, is the song that started it all for Garth back in '89. Other strong ballads are "That Summer", "The Beaches Of Cheyenne", "Unanswered Prayers"(on which Garth is backed up only by his guitar), "If Tomorrow Never Comes", and "The River". These are all among the best songs Garth has recorded and sound even better live. To go on, Garth recorded long versions of two of his songs here. He has one "hit" and one "miss", in my opinion. The long version of "The Thunder Rolls" features the verse(which didn't appear in the studio version but was reenacted in the video of the song) where the battered woman opens her dresser drawer and gets out a gun with which she will later shoot her abusive, cheating husband. Her words: "Tonight will be the last time I'll wonder where he's been." The shooting scene was one of several violent scenes which caused CMT not to broadcast the video of "The Thunder Rolls". The miss, in my opinion, is "Friends In Low Places", where Garth includes his live third verse of the song. The third verse is actually a repeat of the second verse, with the guy telling the lover who ditched him, "You can kiss my--". I think that Garth's cursing in the live version of his classic song(and getting away with it) detracts from an otherwise fine song and album. Still, there is a lot to like about Double Live. Garth put together a collection of his best live performances and made an album that you just have to play all the way through. Double Live is fun and entertaining and includes practically all of Garth's classic hits, plus several enjoyable new songs. Need I say more?

Garth Live,

Making a live Garth Brooks album is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. His concerts--part revival meeting, part love-in, part circus--are spectacles best experienced on a first hand basis. But this comes as close as a mere CD can to presenting the full Garth experience. Wisely, Brooks has chosen to make the audience the star on many tracks. Hearing thousands of fans singing along to "Unanswered Prayers" and "The Dance" is a goosebump-inducing experience. Songs like "Shameless," "The Beaches of Cheyenne" and "That Summer," all fine in their studio versions, take on a new vibrancy live. But it's the upbeat songs that really shine. As Brooks and his crack band tear through rave-ups like "Ain't Goin' Down" and "The Fever," his voice takes on an edge of maniacal glee that drives the audience--and him--into a frenzy. And if the prospect of a live Garth souvenir isn't enough, Brooks has thrown in three new songs, including a duet with Trisha Yearwood ("Wild As the Wind"). The CD is also available in at least seven collectable versions, each with a different cover. Garth devotees can't go wrong with DOUBLE LIVE, and casual fans will welcome having all his hits in one handy package.

It was great! Just Great!,

I loved it! Although I agree with some of the comments on the background noise being distracting. Certain songs are just better recorded in a studio. But I really feel that he gets more *into it* during the concerts (Wouldn't you woth 70 000 screaming fans.) So because of this I felt that certain songs; Thunder Rolls, Callin' Baton Rouge, Ain't going down till the sun comes up. Were just better because of the concert.

This double CD delivers a great selection of Garth's music, with superior audio quality. It is reasonably priced, and it is packaged with the fan in mind. Listening to "Unanswered Prayers" is an experience - the crowd sings along with Garth, which is incredible. Its almost as if he has 20,000 back-up singers. Of course, what's a Garth live album without great tracks like "Friends In Low Places", "The Thunder Rolls", "Callin' Baton Rouge", and "Ain't Goin' Down (Until The Sun Comes Up)"? "Double Live" is impressive as far as delivering the sound on stage to the sound on the CD! I was personally amazed by the quality - I can only think of a handful of live CDs that compare to this double CD. Its a perfect souvenir for anybody who went to one of his shows and lived the experience.
