Convenient and Worth Every Penny!, July 27, 2011
This review is from: Double Shoulder Ice Wrap and Hyperthermia Vest - MEDIUM (100-160 lbs) (Health and Beauty)
My daughter is 13 and swims competitively for a USA Swimming member team. Recently she had to stop training because of a shoulder injury (bursitis) and the doctor recommended physiotherapy to recover and then lots of ice after every practice in order to keep any inflammation to a minimum.
My initial thought on the icing issue was, How do you make a restless teenager comply with a cumbersome routine of adding ice cubes to two giant Ziploc bags and then use plastic tape to wrap them around her shoulders, twice a day, every single day of the year? Well, you don't. It was a lost battle, so I started looking around for options. There is a myriad of shoulder ice packs on the market, but some are too bulky and most are just for a single shoulder at a time. Then I found this gem: the Double Shoulder Ice Wrap by Cold One Inc. It sounded too good to be true, so I was a little hesitant at first. I asked around if anyone (coaches, parents, athletes) knew anything about this product, but it apparently is a new product and there aren't many reviews about it (which is why I'm writing this!). To be sure, it's not an inexpensive solution, but if would be great if it worked, so I decided to call the company and ask: What if it doesn't work? To my delight, Cold One Inc stands by what they sell 100%, and their "money-back guarantee, no questions asked" policy made me feel comfortable enough to buy the vest and let my daughter try it for 30 days. We ordered a Medium size, since it was the smallest they offered.
When the product arrived, we were pleased to see the quality of the materials used. First thought was, Well, you do get what you pay for. Second thought: It will probably outlast all of us. We immediately threw it on the freezer and after a couple of hours the gel packets were cold enough to be used. We took it to the pool in a thermal bag so the gel packs would not thaw too fast. At the end of practice that day, my daughter put it on and immediately fell in love with it. It takes about 10 seconds to put it on and 10 more to take it off. The recommended amount of "contact" time is 20 minutes, and the gel packs usually are not fully thawed at the end of that period. We were also pleased to see that the gel packs (non removable) are well positioned inside the vest and that the contact is more than adequate--one of our initial concerns since she has a small frame.
My daughter has been wearing it after every practice for over a month now, and also throughout the day sometimes. Her coach likes the product, as well as coaches of other teams in our area who have inquired about it. It worked so well for us, in fact, that other parents of kids with similar shoulder issues have purchased the vest also. She is now back in competition and depending a lot on the ice therapy provided by this vest, and she just started topping her best times again. I seriously doubt she would be icing her shoulders properly without this convenient vest!
I guess you could call me a "happy customer". After my initial findings and with my daughter's ongoing experience with the product, I strongly recommend the Cold One Double Shoulder Ice Wrap for young swimmers. It's worth the price, and it will pay for itself quickly when you don't have to pay for the next MRI or doctor visit.
