I was raised with a shut the box game and that's how I learned how to add in my head. When my father died, I got his game. I now have three of these (9, 10, and 12) but this is my first shut the box for two players. I know I hated waiting around for my turn when I was a kid so now the grandkids won't have to wait and they will learn math the same way I did!

This is a wonderful game. It not only is educational, but it is simple. There are not a lot of complicated parts or instructions to it. Every single person that I have introduced this game to has absolutely loved it! The fact that it is double-sided makes it even more fun, especially when you are playing with 4 people. We really love this game!

Recently, we went to a party and played this game with adults. We added money to a "pot" and whomever had the lowest amount of points won the pot for the hand. It was lots of fun but at the same time, we are looking forward to using it to teach our son numbers and addition. Lots of fun.

I wanted this game so that I try another traditional English pastime. The game itself is very simple though, but because it is based quite a bit on luck, it offers some gratification to younger children as well, who have far more chance to win now and then than, say in backgammon, where experience will probably favour the older. The box is fun to look at and throw the dice into, though "shutting the box" is a bit on the noisy side, especially when the kids get enthusiastic or angry.

O, and one more thing: the rules are, I think, incomplete or faulty, as normally the pip count can be divided not only between 1 or 2, but 3, or even 4 different numbers, so a 10 can be used to shut numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, for instance. I think that allows much more strategic options than the rules provided on the box of the game. Also, once 7, 8, and 9 are shut, the player is allowed to throw but one die; however, this is only advisable if only one ore two low counters remains to be shut.

This "Shut the Box" was a Christmas gift for my grandson (age 6) who loves numbers. We have played it and played it, and played it - a real hit for a kid who loves video games and playing ball outside. His younger sister (age 4) has also enjoyed playing. She needed a little help initially, but now "wants to do it herself" and we are excited that she is learning addition, etc. too. My husband and I have really enjoyed the game, too.
I would recommend this for almost all ages.

I needed a fun entertaining item for a married couple snowbound at Christmas (Northeast). Everyone in the family said they are all hooked on this game now! I have the single version, but saw this and knew it would suit this family up North. But anyone would enjoy it. Alot of fun. It's from an old pub game called Shut The Box, and we have a real one from England that has the lid that you shut! I think I may get this double-sided one for my family too.

This is a fun game. Ordered it one day prime to get it before bad weather, and it is really fun. Also helps with math facts, but the kids feel like it is a grown up game, and adults are not bored. So fun, and sometimes short it is hard to say no when they ask to play, unlike monopoly or other material rich games. Easy to set up seconds, easy to put away, few parts to keep track of. You will enjoy it.

This is a great game. Classic! There are a variety of ways to play this as a solo game or as a group. Teaches kids counting and adding as well.
