As a mother of twins who has just made it through the first year, I found Amanda Hamm's book an incredibly fun read. Her essays capture the simple everyday struggles of twins very well, but even more importantly she finds the humor in those stuggles. Even now I find myself smiling in rememberence of passages that mirrored my daily experiences. This isn't so much a classic advice book, but more a series of essays that depict life with twins. And from that vantage point it addresses aspects of twin parenting that no one really prepares you for. I would recommend it to anyone going to have twins or who has also been there/done that.

My anchor for comparison is Elizabeth Lyons' excellent Ready or Not... Here We Come! The Real Experts' Cannot-Live-Without Guide to the First Year with Twins. Interestingly, I reviewed Ms. Lyons' book just days before my own twins were born.

Fast forward to 2010. My kids are in school and Amanda Hamm has written her own very funny book on parenting the first year with twins. Like Ready or Not, Double Take offers a positive perspective, which is a welcome contrast from the doom and gloom warnings we twin parents often hear. She's a good writer--surely the entries from Section I were originally written for a pregnancy blog?--and through daily recollections, she presents workable options for parents of newborn twins, plus (in somewhat reverse order via Section II) tips for parents expecting twins. The book is full of humor with a healthy degree of snark.

I certainly prefer this kind of personal approach to that of the popular Girlfriends' Guides which are gossipy and essentially cobbled together from a variety of different peoples' experiences. Perhaps it helps that Amanda (and her husband) and myself (and my wife) have similar parenting styles. Not that we do everything the same, but in terms of managing expectations and spending a lot of time with our children, I think we're on the same page. (e.g., "As long as you are encouraging positive traits in your kids, it's pretty hard to argue that you're doing anything wrong, or that you should necessarily be focusing on any other positive traits.")

My own preferences for changes are mainly stylistic.

I felt like I was reading Hamm's blog. Entertaining, but not particularly thought provoking. Left me wondering why she didn't have more help at home.

In this book the author writes about her life raising twins. I have twins and this book is far from accurate! I bought this book hoping I could relate to some of the things the author went through raising her twins and either my twins are little devils or hers are little angels. My life with twins is just not that easy! Would have liked to been able to relate to the author but couldn't!

More About the Author

Amanda Hamm decided she wanted to be a writer while in high school. She was too practical to pursue the dream and earned a degree in business instead. The dream pursued her through several years of 9 to 5 and the births of several children. Eventually she stopped running. Amanda has now published nearly twenty books in the past eight years (some bear a pen name). She is usually working on two or more projects at once since mothers of four young children always have so much free time.
