Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Joel Herskowitz is a pediatric neurologist on the faculty of the Boston University School of Medicine. He wrote "The Double Talking Helix Blues" in his first year of medical school and dedicated it to his father, Dr. Irwin H. Herskowitz, a geneticist who had written several books on that subject. As a summer job, Joel and his twin brother, Ira, were commissioned by their father to assist him in editing an extensive textbook of his to a smaller-sized version. That's how Joel developed a comfort level with the subject of DNA that paved the way for his writing this song. It was originally recorded as  "Vertebral Disk" (45 rpm) with a flip-side of "The Battle of Gross Anatomy." He has had the honor of playing it in person for Nobel Prize winner James Watson.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful way to explain the double helix!, October 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Talking Helix Blues cassette Tape (Hardcover)
Kids and adults alike will not only learn about how the genes stack up on the double helix, but they will enjoy the book and love the tape! After the semi-short explanation of how all this comes together and works there is a more indepth explanation at the back of the book. I have found it an excellent teaching aide with middle school students for several years. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Double Helix Neurology is Cool, April 26, 2006
This review is from: Double Talking Helix Blues cassette Tape (Hardcover)
I loved this book. Dr. Herskowitz is my neurologist and mentioned the book/song. So, I took the time and performed a cover song of sorts in front of my Biology class, because we had recently finished studying DNA replication, Protein Synthesis, etc. Low and behold, my classmates loved it. Double Talking Helix Blues is a whitty, folk based song that makes understanding DNA simple.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Double Talking Helix Blues cassette Tape (Hardcover)
I actually got this book as a gift from my Grandma in 1994. It really helped me and the song has always stuck. The other day my Mom said she still had it so I asked her to send it to me. Well for the first time today I read it to my 4 yr old. Yes some was over her head, but she really enjoyed it. When Daddy got home and she was able to tell him she has XX chromosomes and her little brother XY he was shocked! She doesn't understand it all yet of course but its writen well enough to catch her attention! Just think if she start hearing it now how easy it will to be to learn later!
