Book Description

January 30, 2003
I'm Shell Scott, the Private Eye. Well at least I have a private eye when it comes to blondes, brunettes or redhead babes are involved, and I can always spot a hot tamale. You can see why I love my work, and when I heard that Chester Drum was operating my own game on the East Coast, I was in for some ride. There's only room enough for one and Drum was working on my turf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bullets, Broads, Mobsters and a Pair of Real Tough Guys, August 11, 2011

One day this large box of aging paperbacks showed up with the mail. My grandfather had shipped me a treasure trove of Richard Prather and Stephen Marlowe books and I was a happy girl. I read them all, but my absolute favorite was DOUBLE IN TROUBLE. Shell Scott and Chet Drum together. What a story!

These are tough guys, Drum and Scott. They shoot first, ask questions later and never run from a fight, even when they're fighting each other. And they know how to treat a lady, that's for sure, even if neither one of these men is exactly the marrying kind. But they always let the ladies down easy. Plus, the dames always know where they stand with men like these.

In DOUBLE IN TROUBLE, Scott is up against mob union bosses in L.A., while Drum is facing off against their superiors in Washington DC. Scott thinks Drum is working for the Washington mobsters, while Drum thinks Scott is on the payroll of the L.A. bad guys. Sparks fly, fists fly, bullets fly and dames abound as Scott and Drum prepare to face of against each other. But the real fun starts once they figure out they are both on the side of the angels. Then the bad guys are in double trouble.

I am now and always have been a fan of hard-boiled P.I. books. This one was written by both Mr. Prather and Mr. Marlowe. They alternate chapters and it works well. Scott's tone of voice is different than Drum's and that's the beauty of these two pros, conspiring together to turn out this super story. If you like hard-boiled fiction, this is a book for you.
