4.0 out of 5 stars Funny Funny read!, August 17, 2001
By
Rebecca Brown "rebeccasreads" (Clallam Bay, WA United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
It was an ordinary Monday morning in Walla Walla until Lulu raised her hand in class & said to her English teacher: "Mrs. Bell, I feel like a nit-wit. My homework is all higgledy-piggledy. Last night it was in tip-top shape, but now it's a mish-mash."

Mrs. Bell replied: "Nit-wit? Higgledy-piggledy? Mish-mash? Lulu, stop that flip-flop chitter-chatter or you'll be in double trouble!"

With those few words, the day took off into one super-duper, helter-skelter, word warp!

Soon student, teacher & principal are all figuring out what to do until the school nurse comes up with a plan. Will it work? Find out as you zig-zag through the jibber-jabber & yakety-yak of this huge, funny fantasy!

Fun with words at their most absurd & I've been to Walla Walla - fantastic onions!

This book was so funny that our reading class could not quit laughing. We would highly recommend it. If you are looking for a funny book, this is the one. There are four main characters: LuLu, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Bell and Mr. Thomas. They all got caught up in a knock'em sock'em wibble-wobble word warp!

5.0 out of 5 stars An astoundingly engaging picture book full of catchy phrases, September 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
Double trouble will have you doubled over in stitches over the antics of a magnificent red-head named Lulu who sets the entire school ablaze with catchy 2 word phrases such as higgledy-piggledy, chitter chatter when she is sent trit-trot down to the principals office for all of her fancy-schmancy yak-yak. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging and each child has a precious button nose and bulbous eyes. You'll love the expressions both in the illustrations and the text! Don't miss this one. It's a hoot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lulu is superb at silly talk, August 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
Lulu is a pip! When words start cascading willy nilly out of her- its infectious. Kids will love it's sillyness and learn a lot about the latitude of English- as a fun language. The finale was a little crowded on the page- but I gave my storytime kids phrases and we said them all together adding to the hubbub!

5.0 out of 5 stars Andrew Clements shines!, October 18, 2001

Anna Messer (Weirton, WV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
Double Trouble in Walla Walla is simply an amazing book. Andrew Clement's use of wordplay makes this book enjoyable at any age level. As an elementary librarian, turned Educational Consultant, I have read this book aloud over 90 times to both children and adults. However, I am not entirely sure which age group enjoys the book more. Many thanks to the author. This book is indeed a pure treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for everyone, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
As a graduate student in elementary education, I am always looking for books that make literacy fun for kids. I have used this book with kindergarteners, who laughed so hard and clapped when it was over, and have a lesson plan to introduce hink-pinks to older elementary students using this book. My husband and I love this book as much as the kids I read it to. I recommend it to every teacher, and student, who loves to laugh and play with words.

This book is fantastic. It is funny, engaging, and educational. Not only does this book offer opportunity for children to advance their fluency, but it also demonstrates the versatility afforded to any author. This will show students that writing does not have to be boring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read!, November 13, 2010
This review is from: Double Trouble In Walla Walla (Hardcover)
Of course, it had to happen in Walla Walla. Our main character comes to school with a bit of a wordplay affliction - everything she says comes out doubled! Either strict reduplication ("yak-yak"), rhyming ("nit-wit") or, often, what is called PARARHYME ("tip-top", "jibber-jabber"). (And believe me, it was a job and a half to find out the name for the last one!)

It's just an itsy-bitsy bit... contagious. So we just have the standard plot where everybody gets dragged to the principal's office to try to find the root of the problem. The story itself isn't all that interesting, but it makes up for it in the hilarity of the dialog. Yes, it will twist your tongue in knots - but that's why you make the kid read it to you when they get bigger!
