5.0 out of 5 stars UNDISCOVERED GEM!
Finally a hip, funny film that's about something. Although the comedy drives the film it is ultimately the strong emotional story that resonates at the film's end. Watch it carefully; it is a deceptively simple film exploring fame, violence, guilt and (again) a certain idiocy in today's "in yo face" filmmaking. You have to buy it just to see how DiCillo's script weaves...

2.0 out of 5 stars What the heck happened to Tom Dicillo?
I can't totally pan a film that features a nude scene from Liz Hurley (no matter how brief), but overall, this thing stinks. In no way does it measure up to anything DiCillo's done previous to this. I like all of the actors here, but they're given basically nothing to work with here, short of some really anemic Tarantinoisms. Avoid.

You have to buy it just to see how DiCillo's script weaves the above phrase into a classic, utterly original turnaround involving a Bowie knife stuck in a ceiling.
The film simply requires your most basic attention; give it and you'll be powerfully rewarded. DOUBLE WHAMMY is a funny twist on the cop/crime genre. The real crime is that the film was abandoned by its distributors and never released theatrically. Word on the street is that a new studio head simply smothered it to get back at his outgoing predecessor. Ironically the film just won Best Screenplay at the DVD Premiere Awards and it deserved it. As usual, DiCillo's script takes you on a rollercoaster of unexpected turns and delights.
Again, I'm amazed at how every single one of his actors delivers an incredible performance. This is constistent with all of DiCillo's films, even down to the smallest characters. Liz Hurley is a sexy revelation and Leary reveals a weathered, world-weary charm that suggests a young Steve McQueen. Paired with Steve Buscemi as a Homicide Detective going through a sexual identity crisis, the two of them make the most inspired pair of neo-noir cops I've seen to date.
Do NOT rent this movie if you expect to turn your brain off and veg out in front of the tube. Do NOT rent this movie if you think Kevin Smith and Quarantino are geniuses. RENT it if you want to experience something. RENT it if you want to see a skillfull, utterly genuine original.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just tries way too hard..., January 30, 2003
This review is from: Double Whammy (DVD)
...to be oh-so-hip, so Tarantino-esque. More of an attempt to project "attitude" or "vibe" than any real or spontaneous substance. There are a few funny and satirical moments in there, but overall it has the amateurish feel of a made-for-TV movie.
Result: sad waste of some prime acting talent, especially Steve Buscemi adn Luis Guzman. Dennis Leary has always been a mediocre actor with a very limited range, and he's in way over his head as the central character here. Elizabeth Hurley is gorgeous to look at but also possesses a very limited acting range, and WHAT nude scene are the other reviewers talking about? I didn't see anything more than the side of her breasts for about 2 seconds! C'mon guys, you can get more revealing pics of her on the Internet for Chrissakes! As much as I like her, it definitely WASN'T worth sitting through this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars One confused movie, July 1, 2003
This review is from: Double Whammy (DVD)
This movie does not know what it wants to be. A comedy? Love story? Crime drama? It has multiple storylines that we expect to somehow come together (and they do), but they are so different, it simply does not work. The beginning is very funny and entertaining, so you expect to be in for 90 minutes of great movie fun, but right there, the sad urban drama line kicks in and ruins the whole thing. In the end, the sad and the funny parts cancel each other out, bringing the whole experience to NEUTRAL. The only positives are charming Liz Hurley and the cuddly New York setting. But even that is not worth paying for in this case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Won't win Academy Award, but much better than you'd expect., November 27, 2003

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Double Whammy (DVD)
This movie is much better than you'd expect, but you need to be careful. There are parts of it that are gut-bustingly funny (like the two "writer-producers" that wanna be Quentin Tarantino, the interviews with the kid "hero"), but there is also some graphic violence in spots in there. When the latter shows up there is no warning, it's meant to jolt you, so keep this in mind when deciding who should see it. This is intentionally a two thrust movie. If you've ever seen the movie "Fright Night" (also much better than it sounds), you'll understand. Remember in that movie how the first half seemed to be a good comedy and then about half way through the movie essentially flipped and became a really good vampire movie? An even older example was the 1970 Godfrey Cambridge movie "Watermelon Man". Starts out as a comedy and then when you're hooked morphs into a powerful tale of racial prejudice. They do a similar thing here, except that they deliberately go back and forth. They are trying to keep you off balance here and it works.
The film keeps the pace up and never drags. Denis Leary and Elizabeth Hurley play their parts well and believably. Although some of the situation is definitely a stretch, hey--it's a movie!
In short, this movie is defintiely recommended. It's not a Great movie, but it is a Good movie. Nobody will mistake this for a cinematic masterpiece, but it's better than 90% of what's out there. It gets four stars for effort and entertainment value, and not pretending to be more than it is. Your time and money will not be wasted on this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly Whammyless, January 4, 2011
By
This review is from: Double Whammy (DVD)
Denis Leary plays Ray Pluto, a city detective whose life is in a downward spiral. He is still mourning the death of his wife and child from a car accident and his career is at a standstill. One day he and his partner, an odd sad-sack played by Steve Buscemi, pull into a fast food place for lunch. Despite complaining of a bad back Pluto goes in to get the food. While he's there a truck crashes through the window and a gunman jumps out and begins shooting. When Pluto goes to shoot him, his back goes out, he falls knocking himself unconscious and a ten year old boy picks up his gun and kills the shooter.

Dubbed a "loser cop" by the newspapers, Pluto's life goes further in the toilet. He begins a romance with a chiropractor played by Liz Hurley, and becomes embroiled in solving the attempted murder of the super of his building who is a friend. The plot also mixes in the two idiot would-be killers and two other building tenants who are writing a screenplay and try to use Ray's police knowledge to make it more realistic.

Double Whammy tries to be an action/thriller/comedy hybrid but never really achieves the right mix and ultimately fails at all three. The characters are too tepid to be really interesting and the comedy farce never materializes. There are conversations in the movie that just sit there and go nowhere, while in the hands of a skilled writer would have been laugh-out loud funny. Christopher Noth and Steve Buscemi are wasted in roles that barely have any screen time and end up meaningless to the plot. Double Whammy isn't a bad movie but it could have been much more.

3.0 out of 5 stars False advertising, good product, September 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Whammy (DVD)
The dvd cover art, the images of the known actors, the name of the film----they all convey some sort of comedic romp. What we have is a failure to communicate....but, you end up with some funny moments thrown in with truly grotesque violence. The story of good cop gone stale, Dennis Leary, and the recurring themes of his wife and child in flashbacks do not mesh well with the current dystopia/humor/despair that Leary finds himself in. Buscemi is hilarious, the plot is amusing, in the end, even if some of the elements of the love affair with Liz seem forced. A sort of a fairy tale-in-the-city with some blood and death in the middle scenes.
It is definitely worth seeing for the high points, and I will add it to my collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars what has happened to Denis over the years?, March 11, 2003

With Denis Leary and Steve Buscemi in this movie you would think this would be a non-stop laugh riot right? WRONG!. If you like jay leno/Johnny Carson kinda' jokes, then maybe. I thought this movie was very disorganize, very mild in humor, more of a drama/love story, and had about the same enjoyment as stepping on your kids toys in the middle of the night. Denis, please go back to stand up! (I love his "no cure for cancer"!!!!!!)

This was a great, silly comedy that made us laugh out loud- not something I can say about many current flicks. Leary was very believable as the worn out old fashion cop. the screenwriter pair was HYSTERICAL, way too real in their stupidity.
