This recording isn't quite as cohesive overall as Deer Wan to my ears, but I love it just the same.
I love Brecker, and originally purchased Double, Double You for no other reason than the fact that it featured Brecker along with Holland and DeJonette. I figured it would be a safe bet. This record has a lot of blowing on it, and the compsitions are typical Wheeler - lots of space for the ensemble and rhythm section to work, and plenty of room left over for blowing. As on Corea's Three Quartets, Brecker shines on this one, playing just about anything and everything. While Wheeler's music is somewhat in the spirt of the Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams era Miles Davis, his soloing is more towards the experimental side, but very melodically developed at the same time. At the very end of the record, there is a polyrhythmic section where DeJohnette sets up a groove that you just have to hear to believe. Very much his own style, but reminiscent of Elvin Jones, or Tony Williams. Shawn PS I may have to rethink my comments about Deer Wan being a better overall record.... the addition of John Taylor really makes this a special record!!!

This is a recording where you get not only stellar personnel, but a brilliantly conceived, cohesive effort. Kenny Wheeler's compositions are terrific, and their played with real gusto! All the players have their moments in the spotlight, and Michael Brecker in particular really brings it. If you liked Deer Wan where Kenny Wheeler teams up with Jan Garbarek, you should check this recording out. Brecker and Wheeler are terrific together - what a "front line".
If you're a fan of Brecker, Wheeler, Holland, DeJohnette, or John Taylor you probably already have this. It's a real cooker that I never tire of hearing. Shawn |
