Book Description

June 16, 1997
Finally, someone has published a useful guide to Scripture that fits both their pocket and pocketbook.  The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide provides readers of all sorts --from those who know nothing, to those who think they know everything, about the good book--with all the basic information they will ever need, in a user-friendly format.  Once you pick it up, you will wonder how the author packed so much indispensable information into such a handy little pocket-size paperback.  And best of all, it takes the fear and confusion out of reading the Bible.

Beginning with answers to questions like, "What is the Bible?", the guide gives highlights of each biblical book.  It introduces several ways to read and study Scripture and supplies thumbnail sketches of well-known people and places in the Bible, for a better understanding of the biblical world.  An indispensable Glossary of Key Terms defines Scripture's most common words and concepts.  And for those interested in history, a Timeline situates the Bible in its place in history--from the dawn of civilization through the end of the first century A.D.  Similarly, five Maps of Bible Lands place biblical events in geographic context.  Readers find personal comfort and enrichment in the sections for Finding Help in the Bible and the Complete Revised Common Lectionary.  An annotated list of Tools for Bible Study rounds out this amazing companion to the Bible--it unlocks the treasures of the Bible.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Nine in ten Americans have at least one Bible in their homes, but nearly half of these Bible-owners rarely or never read the Bible. The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide can help close the gap. It is an important companion for Americans who would like to know the Bible better and would like to see the Bible become an essential part of their lives."
--George Gallup, Jr., Chairman, The George H. Gallup International Institute

"The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide is a key to unlocking the Bible. It is helpful for the beginner or the more advanced reader."
--Sir John Templeton, Founder, the Templeton Funds and the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion

"To me the Bible, always on the table in our family room, is like the presence of a friend. It can bring comfort when sadness comes. It tells how to handle hurtful situations. It shows a way of life that brings happiness, love, peace and exuberance. The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide can help us find these timeless truths."
--Ruth Stafford Peale, Chairman of Guideposts, Inc. and a Director of the American Bible Society and Laymen's National Bible Association

"The Great Commission of Jesus Christ is all about our making disciples throughout the world. However, if we are to become disciples and follow God's will for us, we must understand what God has said to us. Regular Bible Study is important. The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide assists us in opening up Scriptures for us and is a handy guide that puts God's word at our fingertips."
--Bill Bright, Founder and President, Campus Crusade for Christ, 1996 Winner of the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion

"Christianity is a revealed faith. God has revealed himself in a person, Jesus Christ. The main way we know about Jesus is through God's revelation recorded in the Bible. As we read the Bible we experience a transforming relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The Doubleday Pocket Bible Guide makes the Bible more accessible for ordinary people and will help people to experience this relationship with Jesus Christ."
--Reverend Nicky Gumbel, Holy Trinity Brompton

More About the Author

The Rev. Linda L. Grenz is an Episcopal priest, author and the founder of LeaderResources, a publishing and consulting organization serving the church. Linda was one of the first women ordained in the Episcopal Church, becoming a priest in 1977, just a couple of months after the rules were changed to admit women. She has served parishes in Delaware, New Jersey and Washington DC. She also served in two roles in the headquarters of the Episcopal Church -- as the Associate Director of the Overseas Development Office (working primarily in Africa) and as the head of the office for Adult Education, Lay Ministry and Leadership Development.

Linda started LeaderResources (www.LeaderResources.org) in 1994 with the vision of distributing curriculum as downloadable files and a licensing program whereby churches pay an annual fee to download the files as needed. Her vision and company were ahead of the curve - but most major denominational publishers have now adopted her model. Most recently, LeaderResources added print-on-demand books - again, moving to the front edge of adopting new technologies. LeaderResources now publishes over 50 curricula and has dozen of books in print - all done as an entirely virtual company. Linda has written several books and curricula, published by her denominational publisher, major publishers (Doubleday/Random House) and by LeaderResources.

Today you'll find Linda working in the house she helped design and build. Sited on the top of a hill overlooking the Connecticut River Valley near Northampton, MA, it provides a bird's eye view of the world and a sanctuary for a writer.
