Biography

Southern Culture on the Skids is an American band who produces feel-good surf-rock music with a healthy dollop of humour and an obsession with fried chicken and banana pudding.

The band were formed in the mid 1980s by guitarist/singer Rick Miller and by 1985 they had an eponymous debut under their belts. The band split briefly but re-grouped and finally released Too Much Pork for Just One Fork in… Read more in Amazon's Southern Culture On The Skids Store

5.0 out of 5 stars would you like some kudzu on that?, May 1, 2006

Take a dash of the B-52's, a dose of Dick Dale, and a heaping load of straight-ahead rock and roll, and you've got Southern Culture on the Skids. They've got a really talented guitarist named Rick Miller who looks like the demented hillbilly cousin of Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen. They've got bouffant-hairdoed bass player Mary Huff, and the steadiest drummer this side of Ringo Starr, Dave Hartman.

If there ever was American Graffiti-style music, readymade for scooping the loop, this is it. This is music to just get on board with and take a ride. Everything is pretty fast and furious and under three minutes, except for one excursion into twelve-string jangle rock (Mary Huff's feature, "Just How Lonely") and a six minute blow- out called "Meximelt" at the end, that segues in and out of Dick Dale's "Miserlou".

You can't get much more elemental than this, and you can't get much more fun. If you haven't been introduced to this band before, this cd reveals what they're all about. Time for you to GET CULTURED.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supersize it, December 15, 2006

Ooooo yeah, this one rocks out. Imagine the Cramps on speed, sparkling and twirling in the glow of a lava lamp instead of prowling around by a black light. Goes down even better with a gigantic plate of chicken n' waffles!

Be sure to check out the 2-disc version. You'll get an even bigger helping of SCOTS goodness, including some videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the World's Greatest Band - in Action, March 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Doublewide & Live (Audio CD)
Southern Culture is the best band, and especially the best live band, going. They flirted with stardom in the mid-1990's, and they are still rocking their behinds off. The trio (usually plus one hired gun) does soul, swamp rock, rockabilly, surf, beach, go-go, country, lounge, and more, but makes it all unmistakably their own.
Think Wet Willie with driving guitar; think B-52's with Ted Nugent on lead guitar; think the Ventures with a near-punk edge; think Nancy Sinatra with the Rolling Stones... But no description makes sense until you hear them. And you haven't heard them until you've heard them live.
Their shows are a joyful ruckus, with fried chicken flying and a full dose of audience participation. This live album is as close as you can get to the action without seeing them in person. Check out their tour dates (and some videos from these same shows) at scots.com and don't miss them when they come to your town. They are an American retro original. I love them.
