Flawed, but strong album from Sir Doug,

This album has some great cuts on it: the classic "Cowboy Peyton Place," "Floataway," and the Gene Thomas medley all are wonderful Texas rock with a little pedal steel thrown in for good measure. I don't know who mixed the album, but on a couple cuts it fades out while Doug is in the middle of the chorus! This is especially troubling on the great "Give Back the Key to my Heart." A better version of that is found on SDQ '98 or Get a Life (same album - different names) because it lets Doug finish! Some of the songs on this one are a little further out than what I enjoy - the version of "Wolverton Mountain" and "Texas Ranger Man," but overall it's a great disc if you can find it. Maybe, like much of Doug's other albums, it will come back into print soon.

Best "Texas Music" ever?,

If Doug Sahm had only made this album his legend and importance would be secured, but fortunately for us he made many more. Sure his lyrics get a little hippy-dippy, and sentimental at times but if you've got a problem with that go listen to some soul-less, derivative Nashville tripe; there's plenty to chose from. I believe this was his first full-length with the Texas Tornadoes and they compliment each other well. Great music for a party or even holed-up by yourself on a stormy night. Standouts include "Cowboy Peyton Place", "Texas Ranger Man", and "Give back the Key to my Heart" but every song is a great example of Sahms's mix of Tex-Mex, Rock and Roll, Blues, and of course country music the way they used to do it.
