Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8ADixon's revision of his 1993 volume updates some information while letting other details slide. One of the most noticeable changes is the replacement of the name Anklosaurus with the name Euoplocephalus (a type of Anklosaur), though virtually all of the textual information about it stays the same. The entry for Oviraptor is replaced by Argentinosaurus, a recently discovered giant that weighed 100 tons and was 40 feet high. Though it makes sense to include this exciting discovery, ironically, a section comparing the largest dinos never mentions it. The information on Oviraptor is reworked in the chapter on egg-laying dinosaurs, even though the index still cites its former placement. Most other changes are minor, like an update of the map showing locations of dinosaur discoveries. Some changes seem unnecessary. For example, the largest tooth, previously T. rex at six inches, is changed in this edition to GigantosuarusAstill at six inches. Also, some petty errors remain unchangedAthe Eurypterid is shown swimming right side up in both editions, when it actually swam upside down. This is still a good resource, but the revision is not substantial enough to demand replacement.ACathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library

From Kirkus Reviews

From the author of many other dinosaur books, solid information for older fans in an appealing oversize volume with lots of color illustrations--an overview of life on earth, the dinosaurs' rise and fall, 26 species in detail, and a look at anatomy, senses, skin, life span, and migration. Dixon also discusses early fossil hunters, plus modern techniques of study, and answers dozens of questions: warm- or cold-blooded; biggest, smallest; most teeth; etc. Younger readers will appreciate helpful inserts giving names, pronunciation, size, range, food, period, and scale drawings. More text than most; up-to-date and intriguing. Marginal glossary with unnecessary entries (``hoof''); extensive index. (Nonfiction. 10+) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Browse, May 26, 2001

My 6 year old son loves this book. Of course, we own more dinosaur books that you can shake a stick at, but this one stands out. The drawings are engaging and the text well-written.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best-for kids and adults, February 20, 1999
By A Customer
Most kids are interested in dinosaurs. They fascinate them with their beauty and immense size. This book, Dougal Dixon's Dinosaurs, is the absolute best book ever published for children interested in dinosaurs. The book highlights the seven groups, famous paleontologists, and other important facts, such as dig sites and the history of fossil hunting. But, this book is not only for kids. It is so well written by Dougal Dixon and Peter Dodson that even adults will enjoy its wonderful content and learn a lot from it. It is a must for all children, and all adults who are still bitten by the "dinosaur bug". Five stars for Dixon and Dodson, two of the finest dinosaur and paleontology writers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not just a kid's book., June 19, 1998
By A Customer
I like these kinds of books because they pack in a whole lot of general information and have lots of good graphics. In contrast, many "adult" books are too wordy, too detailed, have lousy indexes and TOCs, way too few pictures, and describe the author's adventures more than the supposed subject. The main fault I found with this book is that some of the information seems out of order and some of the graphics could be improved. But hey, I checked this out of the library, and it was good enough to buy.
