Book Description

April 1995
No wonder dough crafts are becoming more popular all the time. It's the most inexpensive modeling medium in the world. And now, due to some recent techniques, your projects can last a lifetime. Forty original, step-by-step projects let you explore salt dough's versatility. They include: Citrus-fruit plates with "looks-real-enough-to-eat oranges and lemons. A welcoming sun plaque. A colorful court jester doll. Stunning carnival masks. Those with traditional tastes can capture bygone charm with a folk angel, gingerbread heart, or fruit-filled cornucopia, while a cowboy-theme Tex-Mex clock, unique metal-embedded bowls, and a checkerboard covered with friendly lizards will be delightful additions to contemporary decors. Because it's completely non-toxic, salt dough is ideal for children. Animal finger puppets and a dinosaur are fun toys that kids can make by themselves or with an adult friend. All techniques for kneading, coloring, drying and baking, painting, glazing and varnishing are clearly explained, including how to use basic household items such as scissors, toothpicks and wire to achieve spectacular effects. 160 pages (all in color), 9 x 11.

From Booklist

Every five years or so, another writer-craftsperson discovers the nineteenth-century German concoction of salt dough and molds it to current design trends. Unlike her predecessors, Owen actually demonstrates how to sculpt practical items, from mirrors and pencil holders to serving dishes and wall clocks. Motifs for the more than 40 projects are inspired by country and folk art as well as contemporary fads; a Mexican tree of life, for instance, is presented alongside a hanging, chubby-cheeked folk angel and a rotund, generic dinosaur. Directions are plentiful, including color photographs of the more complicated steps. Barbara Jacobs

This book is great and teaches you how to make creative projects from ... water, flour and salt! Some objects showed by Cheryl Owen are folk, and other are very sophisticated. Dinousaurs, cornucopias, flowers, stars, butterflies and other creatures are turned into necklaces, pencil holders, hanging decorations, bowls, boxes and other projects that can be made to and by children and adults. The author give us precious ideas in how to use this fantastic a-toxic, cheap and versatile material. Buy now!
