Book Description

"...the perfect combination of romance, food and wine! I hated putting this book down and looked forward to my opportunities to escape with Chef Nick."

"Great for that long weekend at the beach!"

"...Wonderful!... Doughnuts made me laugh and cry and laugh again. Malik brings to life a delightful cast of characters while weaving together a tale of strength and survival. A must read!"

Nick St. Germaine, Woodmont Retirement Community's Executive Chef, is emotionally distraught as the second anniversary of his wife's death looms on the horizon. Troubled by nightmares and challenged by his son to move forward one day at a time, Nick is doing that, but just barely. He takes solace in early morning workouts at his gym, long runs and longer hours in Woodmont’s kitchen. An unexpected change in management brings a new Director, Amy Sommers, a beautiful, divorced nurse with little knowledge of the Food and Beverage business. Nick is quick to show his disdain for her, so much so that she comes close to showing him the door her first day on the job. Yet Amy is convinced to give him a chance to prove his worth and she soon finds out he's an effective manager as well as a great cook with a tighly-knit, though overly protective kitchen staff. As Amy takes charge of the many facets of Woodmont, she soon realizes her greatest challenge lies in the broken heart of Nick St. Germaine.

With a supporting cast of quirky cooks, cranky widows, World War 2 vets and endearing octogenarians, Doughnuts for Amy is a six-course tasting menu of fork-tender romance and unexpected comedy that will have you asking “what’s for dessert?”

"...Malik serves the love hot, the anger at a boil, but the sadness and despair ice cold."

"...will have you rooting for the good guy (and lady)."

"...Malik deftly combines the ingredients of love, loss, work and family and a cast of colorful seniors into a wonderful first novel. This book will appeal to everyone from hardcore foodies to those that enjoy a story that takes you from the depth of the loss of a loved one to the high of a new found love. Well done Chef Malik!"

"John Malik's debut novel is both heartfelt and endearing. The cast of characters is charming, the settings realistic, the recipes fun, the food sounds delicious...I imagine he'll just get better and better.
Warning - keep a tissue handy. There will be crying"

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down!,,, January 4, 2012

This book was such a great read! It was refreshing and fun, and if you like cooking, you even get a cooking lesson thrown in! Even if you don't cook, you can live the life through Nick. I didn't want to put it down, and so I didn't! Now I am ready for the next Malik book....and I can hardly wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Romance & Doughnuts a winning combination! December 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Doughnuts for Amy isn't your typical romance. Which in this case is a good thing! We meet Chef Nick St Germaine, an accomplished chef and athlete, a widower who is struggling to overcome guilt about the death of his first wife "...He would have cooked for her, she didn't need to go to the store..." with being a single Dad to teen aged Theo. As Nick deals with guilt, nightmares, loneliness, and dating again, he falls in love. This setting shows us an inside look at assisted living communities as well as giving us a chef's eye view of kitchens, cooking and seduction. The only thing that would make this book better, is if it came with a dozen of the doughnuts made by Chef Nick St Germaine for his lady love. This book is a winner!

4.0 out of 5 stars Delectable Cuisine for the Eyes February 9, 2012
By BlueDog
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A fast moving uplifting story of the re-birth of love. The read is much like a ride in a Z4, top down, on a sunny day through the hills, rolling through the gears, hard on the accelerator, light on the brakes, a little loose in the tail. This novel is full of twists, turns and even detours. Malik serves the love hot, the anger at a boil, but the sadness and despair cold. Crisp, descriptive language lays open the emotions of main and supporting characters. Unique setting for a story. It will have you rooting for the good guy (and lady). Well worth a weekend read.

I'm just thankful I didn't pay for this book. Very corny, immature, hard to follow, and poorly edited. Your average twelve year old would love it.

Following that he was Excecutive Chef at two upscale retirement communities in the Greenville area. John has a B/A in English from Southeastern Louisiana University and has written for Smithsonian Air & Space, Saveur, the Greenville News, Greenville Journal, e-Gullet and has been featured in Southern Living, Bon Appetit and Chile Pepper magazines. John has made numerous guest chef appearances including the Food Network, Fox & Friends, the International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World, Great Chefs of the South (Beaufort, SC) a Salute to Southern Chefs (Paso Robles, CA), the Epicurean Evening (Los Angeles, CA) Charlotte Shout (Charlotte, NC) and Greenville's own Euphoria. John and Amy will celebrate 25 years of marriage in May of 2012. He just so happens to make a really good doughnut.

I was the chef at a very nice retirement community in Greenville for about a year and on April First (not kidding!) we had a change in management and our community had a new boss. A wonderful, smart and strong woman that was totally dedicated to the care of the elderly. A month later she asked her department heads to do a daily rounds report just like a doctor would, "Get out of your department, meet someone new, say hello to a stranger then write me and tell me who you met or what impact you had that day." About a month later my short emails to her had bloomed to 500 word essays. She would read them, shake her head and smile and tell me "you really should write a book John, you're such a gifted writer." So she was the one that planted that seed, my wife loved the idea and a year later I had written my first novel.
