God bless the folks who decided to issue this album and the other original Mercury/Smash records for Sir Douglas. They are worth having. George Rains, Wayne Talbert and the horn section stand out on this album, along with Doug Sahm's soulful vocals. Who cares if the words occasionally wander into wooly 1968 imagery, the music is tight and sophisticated (I still recall playing this album 30 years ago to my dorm neighbors, who were shocked by the brilliant playing. "Is that really the Sir Douglas Quintet?" one asked). The original record was short even by late 1960s standards, so the reissue thoughtfully includes three bonus tracks from the long out-of-print "Rough Edges" album. Ed Ward's liner notes are informative. Who could ask for more?

Sir Douglas Honkey Blues is one of the greatest jazz/r@b/blues albums ever made. This is not the Doug Sahm/Augie Meyer group that made many top 40 hits and eventually segued into the Texas Tornadoes (that SDQ does 2 bonus tracks at the end of this cd issue). The Sir Douglas Quintet Plus 2 was an incredible 1968 collaboration between Doug Sahm and outstanding San Fransisco area jazz players Wayne Talbert (piano), Martin Ferrio and Mel Martin (horns) among others. This was a very seriously fine band, one of the best live bands I've seen in a lifetime with many live music highs. My only complaint is that the album was wayyy too short--in their live performances they really stretched out. Most people have no idea this band ever lived.

Plain and simple, this is the best soul rock out there. Electric Flag may have had raw talent than the Sir Dougless Quintet, but Sir Dougless was smarter.

At the peek of rock getting a massive tye-dye, this band does not, like the Flag onA Long Time Comin' try to psychadelisize the R&B. They leave it pure and it radiates on its own massive power.

Pure does not mean simple: this music has all kinds of jazzy moves, and the songs are full of compositional adventure. The singer sounds a little like Jack Bruce, and at times, the band does it fact sound like a less experiemtnal Cream.

But on its own terms, this is equisisite music--and you gotta own it.

Fantastic CD. Very left field, sounds like what it is...a Texan lands in San Francisco in the 60's and jams. Great horns and grooves. If you're an experimenter, this one is for you!!!

Another real good album, the usual unique Sir Douglas Quintet sound with horns and fused rock. jazz. blues feel.
