Finally, a hammer to replace my old Bluegrass framing hammer,
By Mr. Kim T. Hayfield (Chambersburg, PA United States) - See all my reviews

I've used a 20 oz. Belknap Bluegrass framing hammer for 25+ years but have been unable to find an octagon replacement handle like the original. I've tried a few different brands of hammers to replace it but have been disappointed. I recently purchased a Douglas 20 oz. framing hammer and am amazed. Great balance and feel. I won't miss my Bluegrass 20 oz. any more, though I still use my 16 oz. for finish work, siding, etc. I can't recommend the Douglas framing hammer enough... Great hammer, worth every penny. Kim T. Hayfield

I have tried other hammers, Stilletto, Stanley (UGH!), Vaughn, etc. The Douglas is a work of art let alone an well designed tool. The Traction Face is stellar and won't mushroom after repeated wailing on a nail puller. The center nail pull is nothing short of amazing, talk about leverage. Magnetized nail set is very handy, and most of all the polished steel is just sexy. I also have a waffle face for demo work, and an 18 oz finish that is just as nice. American made, and well made at that.

Amazing Hammer,
This review is from: Douglas Tool DFR20S-16CX 20-Ounce Framing Hammer with 16-Inch Handle (Tools & Home Improvement)
This hammer is worth every penny! I use this hammer all the time in framing and demolition on remodel jobs. I am convinced that the balance of the hammer and the thickness of the handle are important in reducing the stress on my arm while hammering. This hammer has saved me quite a bit of time by allowing demolition work to be completed sooner and the ability to drive nails faster than with any other hammer I've owned. This hammer has all the leverage and driving power you will ever need. The magnetic nail set is also very helpful. You may not need it every day....but when you do need it you are grateful to have it. I would recommend that you also get a finish hammer in a addition to this one. The large head does make it hard to work with smaller nails and in tight spaces.

I missed out on the original Hart Woody, but when Douglas (Coonran) won back his patent rights and started producing an updated model, I picked up the 18 oz finish and 20 oz finish and framing hammers. After a couple of decks plus some interior framing, I can say that the hammer works as advertised. Traction face is about as effective as a waffle pattern and leaves fewer tracks, handle stays tight. The only beef I have is that the company making the handles could do just a bit more work to lose the routed edges.

An Heirloom Quality Workhorse,

I've got a four year old son. I'm confident this hammer will be among his cherished heirlooms. The "D" shaped head is a great design. With a little practice you can roll the hammer just a touch on that last stroke and set the nail head with the corner. I also get tremendous leverage with the side pull by hooking the nail and pulling forward against the nose as if I were using the claws. This is another place the flat face of the "D" head really shines - That flat edge is a very stable fulcrum. I hate to admit it but I've driven steel pins into limestone, for concrete forms, with this hammer without so much as a mark on the face to show for the substantial abuse. This hammer is tough! The balance is just right, the features are clearly designed by and for a real carpenter and Mr. Douglas even managed to make it a work of art fit for a gallery wall. My hat's off to you sir - I believe you may well have arrived at the perfect hammer!

Another voice in the crowd of Douglas-lovers,

I'll add my own recommendation to the chorus: the Douglas hammer is wonderful. One thing no-one seems to have mentioned is the side nail puller feature. It allows the pulling of nails that are fully clinched! If my Douglas ever breaks (and I have seen one broken head, apparently from misuse), I'd buy another.

Ole' Faithful,

I never do reviews but I want to help people decide on this one. I have used a 20oz douglas framing hammer for over 3 years now. I broke the first handle in 2 days but the spare handle has lasted me since. I have been a carpenter for 10 years now and have tried almost all of them because I'm so picky. I'm a crew leader at my job and when I'm not using my hammer, somebody else will ask to use it. What's funny is just today I went to another job with a helper and while there a guy working in concrete had to use it. After 2 hours I talked to him and he asked me how much I wanted for it. Jokingly I said $70 because that's how much they are on the internet. He pulled a hundred dollar bill from his pocket and told be to bring back his $30 in change. At first it was kinda hard to sell ole' faithful, but I figured I could help him out. I tell you now especially if you are a framer, and I've used it for many other jobs too, you can't go wrong with this hammer.
