5.0 out of 5 stars Rare sessions by Dauglas Williams, October 3, 2000
This review is from: Douglas Williams (Audio CD)
Dauglas Williams led a small group in the late 20's, sometimes a trio sometimeas a quartet, for The Victor Recording Company, which came through Memphis(Beale Street to be exact) looking for local talent to record. The talent scouts wanted real hot black jazz, so they would go into various clubs, and sign different bands to cut a few sides. Dauglas Williams was discovered and recorded with his various small groups between 1928-30 in Memphis, he had a great stride pianist, and usually a drummer. Williams played a clarinet. Though most of these sides were written by Williams(with the exeption of "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight), he was a great clarinet player and arranger. This CD is full of hot blues(mostly instumental, aside from a couople of early vocal tracks) which are slow, but hot. Recommended to rare and vintage collectors.
