I should know since I'm a restaurant consultant who helps restaurants get off to a good start. The variety that is sold to restaurants is in a liquid form and is mixed with hot water on demand by a Douwe Egbert coffee machine, which serves either by the cup or the pot. The coffee is extracted to a liquid form from the bean and concentrated by removing the excess water. That's how it achieves its rich and mellow taste. It is usually the high-end restaurants that have their machine. I've yet to see it in any of the smaller restaurants I've consulted. The taste of this coffee served in the liquid form is unlike any coffee that I have ever tasted. It is WONDERFUL! Rich and flavorful and full of body with zero bitter aftertaste. Kind of like most coffee was years ago before Keurig drove up the price of coffee with their individual pods. Still can't believe that people are paying almost $20 bucks for a 1/4 pound of their coffee but that's what you get when you purchase a box of their 24 pods.
As far as their coffee in dry form I can't speak of that because I've yet to see it served at any restaurant I consulted. I wouldn't think it would be the same when they are processed differently. All I can suggest is to try it yourself and see. The worst that could happen is you spend more than you should on a coffee that would be comparable to something you would purchase somewhere else. Personally, for my own home use I've found that 8 O'Clock (Red Blend) taste better than the majority of coffees now on the market and believe me, being a java junkie who has tried literally dozens of brands, that's saying a lot.

"Douwe Egberts" has its origin in a Dutch grocery founded over 250 years ago, and after numerous changes in ownership the coffee now comes out of nearby Belgium. This Amazon product consists of four shrunk-foil, quarter-kilo packages of the type sold in European supermarkets. (In other words, for the money you're getting a little over two pounds' worth of ground coffee.) "Medium" is the byword for this variety: like most Euro brands it brews up nicely strong, and has moderate body and aroma with low-to-moderate astringency and few if any off-notes. Since the price puts it in the range of U.S. specialty purveyors like Zabar's or your own local coffee house, I'm giving it four stars. You won't be disappointed but you probably won't be overwhelmed, either. It is reliable, good, and well worth sampling. Please note that this ground coffee is not the same genre as the Douwe Egberts condensed coffee that some restaurants use. If you're looking to save money, consider the similar but more aromatic 2 lb Whole Bean Coffee Bag by Tim Horton's, although its availability here comes and goes.

I first tasted this coffee at a hotel in Kansas City and was quite impressed. It is not available in any stores in my area, so I looked on Amazon (they carry EVERYTHING). I did automated shipping and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this coffee!!

We tried this coffee for the first time at a Best Western - couldn't believe how good it was. It has a rich mellow taste with a little bit of a nutty flavor as well. I wish one of our local stores carried this brand.

This coffee is amazing! I worked at a fine dining restaurant that served Douwe Egberts coffee, and had to tell almost every customer the name of this coffee so they could purchase it at home! Wonderful!!!

The comment about it is not the same coffee sold in restaurant maybe true, but it certainly taste the same. Outstanding coffee! We had this coffee in a restaurant in Dallas. The manager gave us the name. We could only find it on the internet and was glad to see Amazon had it. I'm usually not a big coffee drinker, but this coffee has converted me. Good stuff!

This is by far one of the best coffee blends, I have tried. The beans chosen are a perfect meld, with what seems to be a lower acidity, a by product of the medium roast I presume. Douwe Egberts did their job right in selecting beans for their taste. A typical pattern in many coffee house brands is to throw together a low grade more plentiful bean with a few mid to high range beans and then pawn it off as a quality brew at a higher price. This often results in a coffee blend without taste. Douwe Egberts however, did their taste test on this blend and came out with a true winner.
The beans are roasted much lighter than your typical Euro roasts think french roast, again this also helps in creating a coffee that is less acidic. Yet while lightly roasted the beans have been roasted enough so that the oils will be released when put through a drip maker or coffee press, a problem usually encountered with some of the lighter roasts. Their is a defint natural sweetness in the blend that I feel is enhanced with the use of fat free milk, the lactose sugar of the milk becoming the only additional sweetener need. A full fat milk or cream would mask the complexity of the sutler flavors here and leave you with coffee that is creamer on the taste, but be on par with any store brand stale canned bean type where you taste the cream rather than the coffee.
This coffee's blend and flavor would make it great choice for finishing a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs or with a lighter meal where the flavor of the foods are enhanced by a milder coffee that would leaves the food as a co-star with this blend rather than an attention grabbing bitter coffee. Happily five stars and recommended.
