5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the regular guy!, October 15, 2010
This review is from: Dovo Stainless Steel blade BLACK Handle Shavette Straight Razor Replaceable Blade (Health and Beauty)
Let me start off with this: I am no shave enthusiast. I am not a shave geek, or a shave snob. I am not the kind to invest tons of money in luxurious and premium shave products, or the kind to take the time for certain aspects of traditional shaving.

What I am is a guy who simply looking to get a nice clean shave without all of the nicks, burns, and bumps. Part of that search involved replacing my Gillette Mach 3 with something a little more simple. I used to dread having to shave every morning. I knew my face would be itching for the rest of the day, and I would have some ugly razor bumps.

So I decided to look into an old fashioned straight razor blade, and I found this. I have to say, I like the fact that all I have to do is change the blade out and be ready to shave. Unlike traditional blades, this does not require any annual sharpening or daily stropping. Just snap a double edged blade in two and place one into the razor. Once it dulls, just take it out and replace it with the other half.

There is a learning curve with this, however, and like any blade, it has the potential to be dangerous, but once you get the technique down, you're on your way to close and burn/bump free shaves. In addition, I also noticed the health of my facial skin has improved dramatically. My face no longer is red from burn, and when used with old-fashioned shave cream and a brush, it is moisturized and clean.

There are a variety of blades to choose from out there. Just search Amazon for double edge razor blades. Some of the most popular are Derby, Feather, and Merkur blades (I use the Merkurs). Plus, you can also find some double edge blades at local places like Walmart and H-E-B. Just try some and see what works best for you.

If you suffer from nasty shaves and see daily shaving as more of a curse to men than an enjoyable, beneficial activity, then pick up one of these, learn it, and enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Razor for day-to-day use, November 14, 2009
This review is from: Dovo Stainless Steel blade BLACK Handle Shavette Straight Razor Replaceable Blade (Health and Beauty)
As a professional barber i use this razor everyday for everything from facial shaves to lining up sideburns. The ease of use and quick and easy replacement of blades make it a must have for professional and personal use. The only downside i have come across is that the plastic blade holder can get brittle when left in a jar of disinfectant for long periods of time. Keep your razor clean and it will work wonders for you.

I bought this for travel since I can't take my normal razor on a plane. I wish I hadn't. I had decided to buy either this or the Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Straight Edge Razor and 5 Shark Super Stainless blades (which was half the price at the time). I went with the Dovo since that was a name I recognized. If you just want the short and sweet, buy the Parker and save yourself from buying both.

This is too light for me to use comfortably (and by comfortably I mean without bleeding). That alone is personal preference and given as a heads up. If you're used to a straight this will probably be too light for you too.

On to the real problem area. The folded red plastic blade holder. It broke at the folding seam after four or five uses. It still functioned afterward but allowed the blade to move a little. The holes and bumps inside the blade holder don't line up right with my preferred blades (Feather Professional) which allowed those to move a little more. Not that it would matter too much if the bumps did line up since the red plastic bows from being folded (or at least did before breaking) and lets the blade slip out on one side.

One could easily save some time and money by folding a business card in half, sliding in a disposable blade, and securing the whole thing with a paper clip. Use a couple of pencils and a rubber band if you need a handle.

If the idea of a blade rocking wantonly back and forth as you drag it across your neck doesn't deter you then you'll probably love this. I would rather use a rusty box knife than bring this near my face again, a week of dreading and fearing my morning shave was more than enough. Don't take my word for it though, I'm neither a barber nor a shave geek.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Piece of Plastic Delivers Good Shave, May 10, 2011

So, I paid 30-something dollars for this thing, and I was really excited about getting it because I'm eighteen and I've always wanted a straight razor. I hate shaving with a safety razor or those Gillette things my dad gets that has more razors than you have fingers on your hands.

Plus, I'd gotten an idea of what the ideal straight razor should be like in my head. To cut the long story short, it wasn't a Dovo Shavette with interchangeable short razors. Not at all. First of all, I received the thing in an envelope coated in bubble wrap. No box. Inside was this small plastic sleeve with the razor and two blades wrapped in wax paper. Inserting the blades involved pulling the holder out of the straight razor with my teeth, which felt really unlikely to end in success. Then the razors go into the proprietary holder mechanism (I'm guessing it's proprietary, it wasn't designed to retain the blade more effectively, I can tell you) and then the holder goes back into the razor and voila, you have a serviceable straight razor.

This is the most disappointing 35 dollars I have ever spent on a piece of plastic and I have bought a lot of video games, so. A lot of it has to do with expectations, a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's 35 dollars.

But, this thing gave me a much better shave than I would have gotten out of a regular safety razor. It felt a lot more natural as well. It's just not all boss like I wish it had been, especially because antique straight razors are actually cheaper; the build quality is also not something I have the greatest confidence in. An antique straight razor, though? Lasts decades and you could kill a man with it if you wanted to. That is a special kind of excellence right there.

Overall, not a bad buy, I use it every other day and it works fine. Just, you might want to look into getting a classic Dovo straight razor somewhere and refurbishing it. That'll be a lot more cool and give you a decidedly better shave. It'll also last you the rest of your life. Me, I'm going to have to start buying Dovo Shavette razor blades pretty soon, because this thing uses disposables. Sigh.

I am just getting into the world of straight blade shaving and I bought this as a cheap way to practice. You only get 2 blades with this so I recommend getting a box of extras as well. They are only 5 bucks for a box. You will cut yourself as the blades are very sharp and ready for use. Between each shave, remove the blade and rinse out any stray hairs that may have been grabbed into the blade holder. So far, I am enjoying the experience and I'm glad I made this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Razor, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Dovo Stainless Steel blade BLACK Handle Shavette Straight Razor Replaceable Blade (Health and Beauty)
Great little razor. Get's the job done. I actually use "Shark" blades b/c they are stronger in my opinion. Very light and durable and gets the job done. I have been shaving with a straight razor for some time now and started with the Parker SRW, then moved to the Dovo Shavette, and the to the Dovo Black Star (the real deal). I would recommend that Dovo Shavette as the better of the replaceable straight razors. Again, nothing compares to the real thing. Something to keep in mind is the the blade of the razor is half the size of the razor itself or the real straight razor (i.e. takes longer to shave). I got one to make sure that I wanted to pursue the art before purchasing everything needed for the real straight razor. There is a learning curve and I recommend mastering this before the real thing to make sure you like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just starting out, November 22, 2010

This review is from: Dovo Stainless Steel blade BLACK Handle Shavette Straight Razor Replaceable Blade (Health and Beauty)
So I'm new to this whole straight razor shaving world and with that being said this review may only help those of you just coming into it as I am.

For starters I didn't buy this razor from this seller (I cant seem to find them again) so I will only remark on the Dovo itself and not on the shipping.

Any ways the over all make up of the razor is good but not what I was expecting really.. The handle is a light plastic that feels ok in the hand but doesn't have that bullet proof feeling I think most old razors have and the pin keeping the handle to the "blade" keeps the thing from opening up to much while your shaving and that's nice but it does look a little cheap so my money is on that breaking first.

As for the "blade" section.. Its metal and seems well done with a small plastic grip next to the hinge and the first time I tried to take the red sleeve out I thought I was going to rip the thing apart but after a few shaves it pops out when I need it to.

All in all it's a good razor and great for starting out. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the handle is a bit to light and the pin worries me

4.0 out of 5 stars For beginners, January 19, 2012

This review is from: Dovo Stainless Steel blade BLACK Handle Shavette Straight Razor Replaceable Blade (Health and Beauty)
I wanted to try and shave with a straight razor so i bought this as a starter. The handle is cheap plastic, the gray part is cheap aluminum and the blade is very thin and flimsy. Once you put the blade in it holds very well and you can get a great shave. It only comes with 2 blades so i would recommend buying a box along with this.
