Not the Author's Best Work,
By Terracotta Dove (Arlington, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Down Came A Blackbird (The Sidhe Trilogy, Book 2) (Paperback)
Officially, this is #2 in Karmazin's Sidhe trilogy. But as #1 is a stand-alone prequel, this is really the first of two that make up one longer story. And this is the weakest of all three books. The setting is mid-21st Century, around a mining expedition to a nearby asteroid. Except that appears to be a small consideration, as the attitude is ridiculously casual for those scheduling interplanetary expeditions like they're making dinner plans. "Oh, you're going? Then, I will, too!" After all, who needs specialized training to survive the life-threatening pursuits of space travel and rock mining? Most of the story is supposed to be the romance of the half human / half Sidhe Cait and her two human male leads. Except that none of the characters involve seem able to tell the difference between love and lust. The sex scenes are only occasional, but explicit. They manage to be both graphic and boring. And I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, but the discovery of the selkie skins when and where and at that particular time, was beyond ridiculous. Cait's (and her brother Kevin's) family history was introduced so much more successfully in the first book, Covenants. If I hadn't read that, I'm not sure I would have even understood the point of a lot of the miscellany here. The author seems to have started quite a few threads, and detailed and resolved almost none of them. I cannot recommend this book, but I did find #1 and #3 interesting. After you read Covenants, you might just have to read this one en route to Out of the Dark. |
