5.0 out of 5 stars "Down Colorful Hill," a dated but influential masterpiece, January 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: DOWN COLOURFUL HILL (Audio CD)
If you were to ask Mark Kozelek, singer/songwriter of the Red House Painters, about their first album, "Down Colorful Hill," he would probably either shrug his shoulders or walk away. The Painters' sounds have evolved from the shimmering Ivo Watts-Russel influenced production values inherent on all their 4AD releases, into a warmer, more classic rock-influenced sound that Kozelek undoubtably prefers. Either way, this album is a must own for any introspective/sensitive suburbanite with dreams of breaking out of doldrum and apathy, which probably sums up the user base for all sadcore - indie music nowadays. "Medicine Bottle" and "Japanese to English" are the standouts on this disk for me, alongside the epic and haunting hypnosis of the title track. If you preach the gospel of Belle and Sebastian or Elliot Smith, this is another goldmine for you.
