5.0 out of 5 stars A very well-blended, super-strong soundtrack
Sometimes when a record company/executive producer tries to combine two different artists from different musical genres to accompany a movie, it usually is a recipe for disaster. I'm glad that it wasn't the case with Down in the Delta, the soundtrack to the movie of the same name starring Alfre Woodard..

most of this material is lacking.what in the world was D'angelo thinking? Heaven must be like this is a classic by the Ohio Players.he makes it sound simple& boring.Janet Jackson sounds her usual out of tune self.patchwork quilt is the best cut by Sweet Honey in the rock.this could&should have been way better.

Sometimes when a record company/executive producer tries to combine two different artists from different musical genres to accompany a movie, it usually is a recipe for disaster. I'm glad that it wasn't the case with Down in the Delta, the soundtrack to the movie of the same name starring Alfre Woodard..

Featuring an international "who's who" in R&B, alternative, blues and jazz, it (like some other soundtracks) goes well hand-in-hand with the movie.

It kicks off with Sunday (featuring the one and only Whitney Houston) with "Believe in Love", a churchy-esque song with a very positive message. A surprise to me was D'Angelo's smooth jazz remake of the Ohio Players' "Heaven Must Be Like This". The lineup keeps it coming with songs by Sounds of Blackness, Chaka Khan, Keb'Mo and Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Stevie Wonder, Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men), Janet Jackson, Jazzyfatnastees and the Roots, Cassandra Wilson, Bob James, legendary saxman and movie composer Stanley Clarke, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Eddie Levert (of the mighty, mighty O'Jays), Tracie Spencer and R&B husband & wife hit-making duo, Ashford & Simpson. It also features some songs by the late R&B all-stars Luther Vandross, famed brothers Gerald and Sean Levert and Tony Thompson (the lead singer of Hi-Five).

Production was done by Prince, Scott Storch, Gregory D. Hines, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and California rapstar/producer, DJ Quik.

Though underappreciated (like the movie was), it's a must-have with the Love Jones and Waiting to Exhale soundtracks.

I highly recommend the soundtrack and the movie. Thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, July 21, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Down in the Delta: Music from and Inspired by the Miramax Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The movie to this soundtrack will be one of my favorites. But the CD on this is just beautiful. Hearing D'Angelo singing "Heaven Must Be Like This" make you wish you could see how heaven is. "Patchwork Quilt" by Sweet Honey in the Rock is another favorite. It is sweet yet so haunting. "IF Ever" by Stevie Wonder reminds you a nice summer's day and everything is well. Luther's contribution"Only Human" is also another favorite making it mellow yet seductive. A great CD. I enjoy it and you would too.

First of all, there is a track on the CD in which Whitney sings a bridge and for that reason alone you should buy the CD.

Overall, the CD is rich with mellow music with a jazzy twist. A Great collection of artistes on a CD that seems to celebrate Mya's first directorial debut. The first 16 tracks are amazing (NOTE: There are only 16 tracks). With Luther Vandross, Cassandra Wilson on one song together, Why would I hesitate to not fall in love with this.

I put this soundtrack up there with my Love Jones CD. Heaven Must be like this...........Janet, Whitney, Luther, Cassandra and Stevie, Chaka, Me'shell and D'angelo. How can you go wrong?

This CD was recommended to me by one of my Amazon friends and I am really glad that I did purchase it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Track#12 is a Gem, August 28, 2011

Track #12, by Ashford & Simpson, has been my favorite for well over a decade. I am heartsick over the passing last week of Nick Ashford, who was one hella lyricist. I did a little research & it appears this may well be the last song they recorded as a duo!
It's kinda ironic that the song is about breakups & goodbyes, mitigated by the fact that he left this world due to illness... it's so clear he loved his wife and would never have left Valerie otherwise. That he, as a man, could pen the lyrics to "I'm Every Woman" is a testament to his love for her. Rest in Peace Nick Ashford, you will be sorely missed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Wanted!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Down in the Delta: Music from and Inspired by the Miramax Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I had been looking for this soundtrack for quite some time, so I was excited to see it available on Amazon.com.
The fact that the item was described as being in new condition, still in the packaging, made it all the more appealing to me. Amazon provided a timeline for when I should expect to receive the product, but this seller responded to my order and shipped it sooner than I anticipated. I was very pleased when the product arrived in brand new condition, as described. This was my first purchase from this seller but I was very pleased.

If you are a Stevie Wonder fan and don't want to shell out a ton of money for a box set, you NEED this just for "If Ever", a song Stevie wrote especially for John Denver ; -)

5.0 out of 5 stars D'Angelo did it again........., January 19, 2000
This review is from: Down in the Delta: Music from and Inspired by the Miramax Motion Picture (Audio CD)
No matter what he does, his soul shines through it all. Even when he does a remake of something, you feel it as though he originated it. I feel every piece of music that he has been on, and I hope that he continues to make such soulful music for the world to enjoy. Thanks D'Angelo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find your heart, soul and life in this music!, October 23, 1999

Pick a song -any song! From the described aloneness from Janet's "God's Stepchild", to The Jazzfatnastees confession of "Let It Go"; from the desolution of Me'Shell N'Degeocello and Keb' Mo' in "My Soul Don't Dream" to Tracie Spencer's erotically passionate "The Rain", this soundtrack leaves no emotion unturned. It was a stroke of genius to have Sweet Honey In The Rock performing "Patchwork Quilt" -a fitting benediction.

5.0 out of 5 stars you can feel a piece of history, June 24, 1999

An incredible selection of tracks. Whoever put Luther and Cassandra together, or Chaka and Prince, or Me'Shell and Keb' Mo' was an absolute genius. Not one track is off - look out for gems from SUNDAY, Jazzyfatnastees and the tearful track from Sweet Honey in the Rock. You have never heard anything like this - emotional, laid back grooves

4.0 out of 5 stars cool, breezy vibes, February 2, 1999

This review is from: Down in the Delta: Music from and Inspired by the Miramax Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This was a surprisingly good cd considering the uneveness of many soundtracks nowadays. The album introduces the beautiful blend of the group Sunday and reintroduces us to Tracie Spencer who reaches the peak of beauty with her sound "the rain" Other standouts include D'angelo's piece as well as Stevie Wonder's. This cd should have done much better as at times it really is a piece of heaven.
