Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed as "the funniest man in America,"* Chris Rock delivers a first-rate performance in this romantic comedy about a man who gets a second chance at life and love. Struggling black comic Lance Barton (Rock) knows what it's like to die on stage. But when his life takes an unexpected turn - straight to heaven - Lance is sure there's been a mistake. Miraculously, he's right! An angel tells Lance he was taken prematurely but assures him he can be returned to Earth - in the aged body of a ruthless white billionaire. In this improbable reincarnation, Lance begins a hilarious quest to realize his showbiz dream...and, along the way, discovers the person he never imagined he could be. Co-starring Regina King and based on the hit film Heaven Can Wait, Down To Earth is a "bold and brilliant comedy."** *Shawn Edwards, FOX-TV **Kimberly C. Roberts, THE PHILADELPHIA TRIBUNE

4.0 out of 5 stars Down To Earth September 26, 2005
Format:DVD
Hilariously outrageous! One of Chris Rocks best! This movie sees him dying too early only to be brought back in an old white guys body! But here's the punch line, he's a comedian in the movie as well! I was in stitches, definately a must see if you like Chris Rock's dynamic style of comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious movies that will definately make you laugh October 22, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Down to earth and Head of state are similar in comedies in the fact that Chris Rock is a hilarious person. His slapstick-like comedy will definately have you laughing. Some parts are serious, but most of them are incredibly funny. I would rate these 2 movies as the funniest movies that I've ever seen. Well worth the price both movies are going for. Don't miss out on these if you haven't seen them. Down to earth is probably the way funnier movie of the two. I can't stop laughing at it, if you've never seen it you have to.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 FUN MOVIES - 1 GOOD PRICE March 3, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Chris Rock is funny in each of these movies and never fails to poke fun at any stupidity regardless of race. In light of Obama's election to president, Head of State seems even funnier this time around.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very few new things in this film November 2, 2004
Format:DVD
It's clear this is the n-th version of "Heaven Can Wait". As a remake, not many new things could arise in this film.

There are some new things, of course. Some of them are quite reasonably different: the story in this case is about a black man living in the Bronx; the return to Earth is due to the chase of a girl and so this is sort of a (then again) romantic comedy.

But some other things make me feel really dazzed. Heaven is... Las Vegas? Gatekeepers seem to be... like gangsters? And the highest expectation of the main character is... to be a great comedy club man? (and of course not to be booed every time he is acting).

The romantic moments are given by Chase Rock, but the great comedy moments are for Chazz Palmintieri. At least, his appearance makes this film not to deserve a lower rating.

You can have a good afetrnoon at home with this film, but don't expect so much of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris Rock playing an old, white billionaire? July 7, 2003
Format:DVD
Once again, I've discovered that you can't go wrong with a Chris Rock movie. His style and character would make even Titanic hilarious.
In this remake of the 1978 film, Heaven Can Wait, Rock plays Lance Barton, a determined young comedian who's accidentally dragged off to heaven forty years before his time. To make up for the mistake, he's allowed to go back to earth -- reincarnated as Charles Wellington, a fifty-year-old white billionaire. Wellington's family and colleagues are stunned to see the change in him as he becomes more charitable -- and much more attracted to rap music. To their surprise, he even buys a comedy club -- so he can practice his act.
Down to Earth is definitely good for a few laughs. It's worth the rental price just to watch Wellington bustin' a move to Snoop Dogg. And there's even a sweet, romantic side to the movie -- but don't worry... it's easy to ignore.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good way to kill 90 minutes March 18, 2003
Format:VHS Tape
Granted, this film is no classic, but it's a pretty good way to kill 90 minutes.
The scenes where Chris Rock as the elderly White man bobs his head to the likes of rappers DMX and Snoop Dogy Dogg are quite a howl when the camera shows us how the people in the film see Rock in the body of the elderly millionaire. Also, his hilarious soliloquy to the hospital trustees is almost worth the price of admission.
Regina King, the ever-hilarious Wanda Sykes, and the actor who plays Chris' manager are rather likeable in their roles. The scene where the television censor works overtime to bleep out Wanda's profane barrage on the news broadcast is a real knee-slapper.
Yeah, it's not Rock's usual hardcore comedy that's filled with sociological insight, but on it's own, it's still good for a few laughs.
