Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed as "the funniest man in America,"* Chris Rock delivers a first-rate performance in this romantic comedy about a man who gets a second chance at life and love. Struggling black comic Lance Barton (Rock) knows what it's like to die on stage. But when his life takes an unexpected turn - straight to heaven - Lance is sure there's been a mistake. Miraculously, he's right! An angel tells Lance he was taken prematurely but assures him he can be returned to Earth - in the aged body of a ruthless white billionaire. In this improbable reincarnation, Lance begins a hilarious quest to realize his showbiz dream...and, along the way, discovers the person he never imagined he could be. Co-starring Regina King and based on the hit film Heaven Can Wait, Down To Earth is a "bold and brilliant comedy."** *Shawn Edwards, FOX-TV **Kimberly C. Roberts, THE PHILADELPHIA TRIBUNE

Chris Rock's in his first big leading role "Down To Earth".This movie has great comedy, and stand up comedy material and cool soundtrack featuring: DMX,Snoop Doggy Dogg, Lauren Hill, Mystikal and many more. The movie was based on Warren Beatty's hit film of the 70's "Heaven Can't Wait".
Lance Barton(Rock)is a stand up comedian who cant bring it in a big audience and gets booed alot, but it all changes when he gets hit by a semi-trailer and goes to heaven, finding out that it wasnt his time to leave yet they try and find him a body. The body which selects is the 15th richest man in america 'Mr Wellington' a cut throat buisness man who is tryng to close the down Brooklyns own hospital, which the reporter Sante Jenkins hates Wellington and protest against this doing.
The reason Lance picks Wellington is because he has the hots for Miss Jenkins.Lance changes everything with the hospital for Miss Jenkins also working on material for his stand up act in the Apollo as it is about to close. We see alot in this HILAROIUS film as Lance forgets that he is in a white body, we see him driving down to street with snoop dogg in the stereo system, also see him in a black comedy club doing black comedy.
The film has a sad but happy ending, it is weird but you just have to watch it.Surprisingly this film is only PG, knowing Rock's stand up comedy acts we would all think this was going to be M, but anyway it is made out to be a GREAT family movie thats packs alot of laughs. This is a must get for Chris Rock fans and also for comedy fans,it is a fun movie from start to finish and well deserves to be in you collection. The is not many Special features on the DVD, but the movie makes up for it.
HIGHLY RECOMENDED

Hilariously outrageous! One of Chris Rocks best! This movie sees him dying too early only to be brought back in an old white guys body! But here's the punch line, he's a comedian in the movie as well! I was in stitches, definately a must see if you like Chris Rock's dynamic style of comedy.

It seems everyone is trying to get into heaven; at least those whose time is up. For Lance Barton, a struggling comedian and bicycle messenger, it's the last thing on his mind. His due date upstairs is 50 years away. In the meantime, he's got big dreams to pursue on Earth, such as landing a slot at the final Amateur Night Contest at the famed Apollo Theatre. Lance's has one little problem though, he ain't that funny. Thanks to an over-cautious emissary from heaven, Mr. Keyes, he's going to get hit literally with a much bigger problem. Showing that even God has difficulty finding good help these days, the inept minion mistakenly plucks Lance from a traffic accident before it takes place. Transporting him to the Pearly Gates, or more accurately, the velvet roped-lines of the hottest club around, the error is finally addressed by Mr. King, the streetwise, no-nonsense head angel who manages the place from his plush windowed office. Since returning to his own body on Earth is impossible, the urban dwelling Lance reluctantly agrees to a normally unthinkable proposal. He'll occupy the body of a wealthy old white mogul, Charles Wellington, until a more suitable body can be found. Strangely enough, in a Park Avenue penthouse, servants and butlers become his new homeys as Lance works on his streetwise comedy routine for the big Apollo showdown. Living in the body of a callous old white man would be bizarre enough for Lance without falling in love with Sontee, the beautiful woman publicly battling Wellington's company at the same time. And if that wasn't enough, he's got to deal with the love affair between Wellington's wife and his personal assistant, and their plot to have him killed. Rock's personality, his drive, his delivery, his demeanor, and his passion are what fuel this movie. He's clearly having a lot of fun in the role, and he seems bent on making sure you have fun watching him.

You could see what Chris Rock was holding back in several scenes in this movie. If he had had a better screenplay, he would have let rip and this would have been the comedy hit of the year. Those scenes were the ones where it was made clear to you that Rock was really an older, rich white guy who was doing a black man's comedy act. When Warren Beatty made his version of this film (prior to the Rock version), he played it as a straight romantic comedy. It was very cute. However, he is not a comic and so there was no subplot of his being a guy who was trying to make it in standup comedy. By making standup the Rock character's career, it changed the whole thrust of the film yet held Rock back on a leash where you were dying to see his stuff but couldn't. A lot of film time is spent instead on the romance which is pretty much a foregone conclusion if you've seen the prior two versions of this film, which I have.
