No matter if you're studying sociology or just have an interest in how people think, this book will intrigue you.
I bought it for class and expected a boring textbook. Instead I am finding it well worth reading and I especially like how it relates to how everyday people think, not just people in studying sociology.

Too often when you read a textbook it can be very dry and boring. That is not the case with this book. It is easy to read and there are a lot of great case studies to review. Very informative. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in learning more about sociology.

Much more interesting than your standard textbook,
This review is from: Down to Earth Sociology: Introductory Readings, Fourteenth Edition (Paperback)
I bought this book for my Sociology class and ended up enjoying almost every article I read in it. This is the book that made me change my major to Sociology. I highly recommend this for anybody even slightly interested in the subject.

I needed this book for a class I took. The essays are actually very interesting and entertaining and provide great material and topics for colorful class discussions. Unfortunately as is typical with both sociology and today's government led educational system, these topics are steeped in a bias of white-guilt, politically correct, color-blind nonsense. There were many good things that can be gleaned from the essays in this book but this book would have been far better if it included balanced counterpoints. The culmination of viewpoints across the book tend to lead to the current politically correct and warm fuzzy, kumbaya strategy of one world, cultural diversity but everyone is really the same at heart mentality. I also think it would have been instructive had they listed with each essay its publication date because many of these essays appeared to be written or based on research from several decades ago.

This book gives a lot of real life examples and stories that prompted me to rethink about how our society works and how we trap ourselves into the set system we live in today. Also gives a lot of detailed experiences of people, showing the consequences of our society and how it affects each person in any "category" or "group" we are put in. Overall interesting read and I liked that there were many little stories and experiences.

I bought this book for my sociology class as our textbook and it was great. Im more into reading urban street novels but this book was really intuitive and I can say that I will keep it, not sell it to another student and continue reading it in the future. Fabulous and very insightful.

This book is required for my Sociology class. I ordered it via Amazon.com and received it in about a week. I got it just in time for my next class. Most readings so far are very interesting. Good readings.

Down to Earth Sociology,

I purchased Down to Earth Sociology having taken sociology 101 in college and wanting to refresh myself on the basic concepts and issues.
Positive: 1) There were some very interesting articles included in the edition 2) Varied examples of research types Negative: 1) The editor's (Henslin's) writing style is annoyingly repetitive. Re-iterates his own statements multiple times in a short section; if I can understand research papers in the topic you don't have to dumb down the intros of them for me. 2) No counter-arguments to any of the articles leaves reader frustrated. Henslin introduces papers without any criticism. 3) Organization of articles in sections not completely logical In summary, Down to Earth Sociology is worth reading in a classroom setting but not the best book to get if you're trying to introduce yourself to the subject of sociology.
