4.0 out of 5 stars Down To Earth
Hilariously outrageous! One of Chris Rocks best! This movie sees him dying too early only to be brought back in an old white guys body! But here's the punch line, he's a comedian in the movie as well! I was in stitches, definately a must see if you like Chris Rock's dynamic style of comedy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very few new things in this film
It's clear this is the n-th version of "Heaven Can Wait". As a remake, not many new things could arise in this film.

There are some new things, of course. Some of them are quite reasonably different: the story in this case is about a black man living in the Bronx; the return to Earth is due to the chase of a girl and so this is sort of a (then again) romantic...

But some other things make me feel really dazzed. Heaven is... Las Vegas? Gatekeepers seem to be... like gangsters? And the highest expectation of the main character is... to be a great comedy club man? (and of course not to be booed every time he is acting).

The romantic moments are given by Chase Rock, but the great comedy moments are for Chazz Palmintieri. At least, his appearance makes this film not to deserve a lower rating.

You can have a good afetrnoon at home with this film, but don't expect so much of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris Rock playing an old, white billionaire?, July 7, 2003

Once again, I've discovered that you can't go wrong with a Chris Rock movie. His style and character would make even Titanic hilarious.

In this remake of the 1978 film, Heaven Can Wait, Rock plays Lance Barton, a determined young comedian who's accidentally dragged off to heaven forty years before his time. To make up for the mistake, he's allowed to go back to earth -- reincarnated as Charles Wellington, a fifty-year-old white billionaire. Wellington's family and colleagues are stunned to see the change in him as he becomes more charitable -- and much more attracted to rap music. To their surprise, he even buys a comedy club -- so he can practice his act.

Down to Earth is definitely good for a few laughs. It's worth the rental price just to watch Wellington bustin' a move to Snoop Dogg. And there's even a sweet, romantic side to the movie -- but don't worry... it's easy to ignore.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good way to kill 90 minutes, March 18, 2003
By

Granted, this film is no classic, but it's a pretty good way to kill 90 minutes.

The scenes where Chris Rock as the elderly White man bobs his head to the likes of rappers DMX and Snoop Dogy Dogg are quite a howl when the camera shows us how the people in the film see Rock in the body of the elderly millionaire. Also, his hilarious soliloquy to the hospital trustees is almost worth the price of admission.

Regina King, the ever-hilarious Wanda Sykes, and the actor who plays Chris' manager are rather likeable in their roles. The scene where the television censor works overtime to bleep out Wanda's profane barrage on the news broadcast is a real knee-slapper.

Yeah, it's not Rock's usual hardcore comedy that's filled with sociological insight, but on it's own, it's still good for a few laughs.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment for Chris Rock fans, February 3, 2003
By A Customer
I'm a big fan of Chris Rock and I was truly disappointed by this film. So disappointed, in fact, that I took the time to write this review even though I only rented the video, didn't buy it (thank goodness!).

The humor in this film is mediocre at best, and most of the time the jokes are just dumb. The sad part is that Chris Rock himself helped write the script. Maybe Chris needs a while before he can become a successful writer on the big screen.

I recall from the movie trailers that they played up to the fact that Rock's character comes back as an older white guy. It was advertised as a major component of the plot. Well, you are lucky to even see this white guy for more that 5 minutes total throughout the entire film. The premise is supposed to be that when Rock looks in the mirror, he sees himself, but to everyone else, he looks like this old white guy. Most of the time in the movie, you see Rock, even when he is interacting with other people. Remember, they are supposed to be seeing an old white guy, but all we see is Rock.

Another major angle of the plot is that Rock's character strikes up a romance with a young African-American female. This would be completely believable...if it were Rock. But, again, his character is supposed to look like an old white guy. Although the movie is based on fantasy, it's a REAL stretch to think some young black chick would fall for this old white guy. His actions prior to Rock taking over his body made the chick supremely mad at him. So, she suddenly changes her attitude about the guy, to the point of falling in love with him??

In closing, let me say that I'm a BIG Chris Rock fan, and it was just plain sad to see him associated with such a lame film. Let's hope his next screen writing project works out much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant example of a well written comedy, June 28, 2002
This review is from: Down to Earth (DVD)
What if heaven had a mix-up and you found yourself dead 50 years before you were supposed to be? Well, that's what happens to Lance Boston (Chris Rock) in this amiable comedy. Lance is a stand-up comic who is on the verge of his big break when he pops his clogs. As compensation, of sorts, he is returned to earth, but -much to his horror- in the body of a fat old white guy. And what's more, the girl he's in love with now wants nothing to do with him. Comedian Rock had made a good job of moving from stand-up comedy to movie acting and brings a lot if energy with him. It's not subtle, but it is funny.

this is one funny movie! Chris rock is a funny man and he went all out here. It doesnt have great special features mut it is still worth it to buy. It is fun for the whole family. It is a very mild PG-13 so it is apropriate for anyone over 8 about as long as they are smart otherwise they might not get some of it.
Buy it, watch it, enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME DOWN TO EARTH COMEDY, March 26, 2002
By
This review is from: Down to Earth (DVD)
Chris Rock's in his first big leading role "Down To Earth".This movie has great comedy, and stand up comedy material and cool soundtrack featuring: DMX,Snoop Doggy Dogg, Lauren Hill, Mystikal and many more. The movie was based on Warren Beatty's hit film of the 70's "Heaven Can't Wait".

Lance Barton(Rock)is a stand up comedian who cant bring it in a big audience and gets booed alot, but it all changes when he gets hit by a semi-trailer and goes to heaven, finding out that it wasnt his time to leave yet they try and find him a body. The body which selects is the 15th richest man in america 'Mr Wellington' a cut throat buisness man who is tryng to close the down Brooklyns own hospital, which the reporter Sante Jenkins hates Wellington and protest against this doing.

The reason Lance picks Wellington is because he has the hots for Miss Jenkins.Lance changes everything with the hospital for Miss Jenkins also working on material for his stand up act in the Apollo as it is about to close. We see alot in this HILAROIUS film as Lance forgets that he is in a white body, we see him driving down to street with snoop dogg in the stereo system, also see him in a black comedy club doing black comedy.

The film has a sad but happy ending, it is weird but you just have to watch it.Surprisingly this film is only PG, knowing Rock's stand up comedy acts we would all think this was going to be M, but anyway it is made out to be a GREAT family movie thats packs alot of laughs. This is a must get for Chris Rock fans and also for comedy fans,it is a fun movie from start to finish and well deserves to be in you collection. The is not many Special features on the DVD, but the movie makes up for it.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars A great romantic comedy, March 17, 2002

Chris Rock (Beverly Hills Ninja) is hilarious! As well as Eugene Levy (Best In Show) and Jennifer Coolidge (Best In Show). Lance Barton (Rock) goes to heaven to find that Keyes (Levy) made a mistake, accidently taking Lance's life way too early! I reccomend this movie to anyone who just wants to kick back, relax and enjoy a great feel-good film.
