I hope books like this one signal that the short story is making a return. It seems like you don't hear that much about short stories relative to novels these days.
These stories are varied and so well written. The language is great, but does not get in the way of the story. All of the stories move, and you will find this is a really quick read ... but that you think about the stories or go back and re-visit them later. If you are a student, Down in the Flood is a good way to study the form.

I gave this to my husband from his wishlist. It's written by a professor of his in college and he was really happy to get it. Even read most of it Christmas day and enjoyed it.
