Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
On Down for the Get Down, Youngstown struggle to cling to the remaining available bits of the Backstreet Boys' and 'N Sync's coattails. The trio grabs tight to a fistful of fabric with the opener "Machine." With its punctuating, industrial-lite guitar treatment, it holds its own against the Backstreet's "Larger than Life" or 'N Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye." Further, the songs fold in strands of electronic blips and bleeps that promise surprises later on. But halfway through the second track, "Float Away," it's already evident that Youngstown has fallen victim to an overly enthusiastic producer. The fundamentally solid melodies are mired in an impossible tangle of sampled sounds, slippery, scattered rhythm patterns, and more instrumentation than you can shake a synthesized orchestra at. The boys can probably sing, but their vocals are never on display. Rather, harmonies and emotional overtones are compressed into a one-size-fits-all volume (and it doesn't help that all the lyrics are directed to "girl" and "baby" in a most uninspired context). As an album intended for the under-voting-age set, it isn't fun, inventive, or particularly danceable. With luck, next time out Youngstown will find a creative team that will consider their voices more than an afterthought. --Beth Massa

5.0 out of 5 stars Youngstown Strikes Back with New Album!, August 21, 2001
This album is unlike any albums currently on the charts today. Their Sophomore attempt is an absolute winner. The album starts off with the funky, yet meaningful "Machine" and goes into a Jackson 5 styled "Float Away". The album has so much diversity that no one can honestly say that there's not a toe-tapper for the metal heads, and a head bopper for the r&b fans. Comparing the first album with this one, you can tell these guys have grown and matured a lot. Take for instance, "Sugar", the bands first single. It sounds like a real teeny-bopper song, and may take awhile to grow on you, but then you listen to it again, and you realize that the song isn't about Sweet 'n Low at all. It's suggestive, as with many other songs on the bands album, including "Dance Floor 2"-a sequel to a song on the first album. The song is a great club mix, and the sexually suggestive lyrics help meld that vibe in there. The mood changes with every song, and the guys do a great job of transitioning each song into another. Don't think the album is all sugar and fast paced beats. The guys' musical talents are definitely shown in the slower ballads, like "Little Sister"-a song about a girls love gone bad, and "Could You". Youngstown also did a cover of a John Lennon song called "Grow Old With Me". You would think, because they're classified as a "boyband", that they would undoubtedly screw this song up and make John Lennon toss in his grave. Completely wrong. This version of the demo is way better than the original, and each member gets his time to shine with a solo. Youngstown has a hit record here and I say run with it, because they can go far with this one. There's more than one hit single on this album so it shouldn't be much of a problem in the future. Some critics are way too hard on these guys, give them a break. I recommend this album if you're into pop, r&b, and rock because you're going to get your fill of what you want.Go get this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album ever for male vocal group lovers!!, January 15, 2002
By joanna (london Great Britain) - See all my reviews
After buying the first album of Youngstown's "Lets Roll", i was very excited to get this album.
It was no suprise to me that would be a good album, but i just didnt relise how good!! I like many groups like BsB and Nsync but none of their material even compares to this album!!
This is the most inspiring album i have ever heard!! It has some beautiful ballads like "Little Sister" which is definatly capable of making you cry!! Then there is the amazing rock sounding tunes on "Machine", "sugar" and "you want what you want"that you just cant get out of your head and thats not a bad thing! And theres the r&b sounding tunes that are soooo amazing like"Down for the get down", "so tight", "Dance floor part 2" all i wanna do is dance whenever they come on!!
If you love beautiful sounding harmonies than "Away with the summer days"and "Float Away" are definatly for you.
Talking of "Floating Away" I need to get into more detail because this is the most unique song i have ever heard it is brilliant, and it is definatly a good representation of how talented Youngstown are!! When you listen to the song it does actually feel like you are floating!! I find it very relaxing and a joy to listen to!! The other songs "Could you love", "every single thing", "Grow old with me" and "Run to me" are all amazing aswell.
This is the best album to get if you are into BSB, Nsync,O-town, 98Degrees,and Lfo!!Even if your not into them its worth buying it!!!
With most albums there are always a few tracks that you skip but on this album you dont! And with practically every album you have ever got, it has always been fairly easy to choose your favourite song, but on this album every song is your favourite in their own special way!
I just wanna say that i think Youngstown are way under rated they are all sooooo talented and are brilliant singers and this album is the proof of that!
Down For the Get Down is definatly the album you should be buying!!!
