A Sobering History From the Horses Mouth, January 7, 2010
This review is from: The Down-Grade Controversy (Hardcover)
It's very easy to remember only the happy aspects of a faithful life, especially one as gifted as Charles Haddon Spurgeon. But in most cases a faithful life, one that refuses to compromise, will run afoul of the world in its values and movement. This is to be expected of Christians, but it is most grevious when the movement is within the church as it marches toward entanglement with the world. Spurgeon saw this in his latter years and like so many before him, tried to put on the breaks, get off the downgrade, and return the Particular Baptists of England back to its primitive beauty. These are the source articles in which that struggle was recorded. It is both refreshing to see godly men stand firm, and sorrowing to see they are fewer in number than they who want the baubles of this world.
There are several places on the net where you can find all of this material in electronic form. But this is important enough material that I wanted it in physical book form. The binding and paper are quite acceptable and the print is fairly large and clear. It seems a bit overprice to me, comparable to other books of its size and quality, however, the content within is priceless and unfortunately there is just not a high demand for this material in order to bring down the price in by an economy of scale.
I would recommend this book to any who want to see Spurgeon in his most sober frame and ponder what we are called to do in our time.
