I've been a fan of Sonia Dada for a few years, but have never heard them live. Now I understand what has been missing from the studio albums. This is probably the best live album I've heard in a long time, by anyone. The group seems to click - the songs all sound tighter, crisper and more enthusiastic - and the recording is superb. Aside from the last song on the album, it's all excellent. This is also the first time I've given 5 stars to any album review.

Sonia Dada is just one of those great bands that don't get a lot of air time. I still haven't figured out why. They are one of the most talented groups I have heard in a long time. They can be described as a hybrid of gospel, rock, jazz, and rhythm & blues. I have to be honest though, I have talked quite a few friends of mine to listen to their music and some of them just don't find it impressive. Others, however, just find it as awesome as I do.

I promised myself I would only chose 15 CD's to give 5 stars to. That is why I could only give 4 stars to this one. If only there was a 4 1/2. "A Day at the Beach" was one of my top 15 and I still believe it sounds slightly better than this live album. I don't want to take that away from how good this CD sounds. It is truly awesome and although most of the live songs come from the studio versions of "A Day at the Beach," there are some new treats to discover such as "You ain't thinking," "Don't Go," and "I want to take you higher."

"Lay Down..." is truly the best of Sonia Dada, for one simple reason - this is a band that sounds better in a live setting. For those unfamiliar with the group, Sonia Dada is a rock band with a great hard-edged soul/R&B flavor, which is only improved by the addition of a horn section on these performances. And, their high-octane cover of "I Wanna Take You Higher" alone is worth the price of admission. A great live album.
