Down Low Drama, July 4, 2008
This review is from: Down Low Sistahs (Perfect Paperback)
If you pick up DOWN LOW SISTAHS, here's a warning: Read at your own risk.
Urban author Wakiem Freeman's tale of sistahs gone wild is blunt in its approach. The eye-opening plot centers around a dude named Nicor, who can't seem to find a straight sistah to save his life.
It begins with the surprise his girlfriend Tamar drops on his 25th birthday: she has a girlfriend. This comes after dating him for six months and seeing future with the tall beauty. While he imagined they'd be married and having babies, she was slipping out her female lover. Nicor is incensed, hating the fact he was played like a fiddle.
Nicor is determined to find an honest woman with no lesbian tendencies. Instead he runs into female after female with a scandalous past of licking the cat. He's tired of men getting browbeaten about having DL inclinations, when women are out here wilin' out. His revenge occurs when Nicor writes a song about these women and catches superstar media attention. It all comes together for the befuddled brotha - until Tamar attempts to re-enter his life.
Freeman, to his credit, does give a candid male perspective to women living double lives, unbeknownst to their male partners. This behavior does happen, but is it possible that every woman he dates has a female lover? What I also didn't care for was the explicit sex scenes Nicor had with different (read: a lot) women that didn't add much value to the story. It offended me that he can denounce down low sistahs for their callousness, but he could sleep with woman after woman with little regard. The disrespect surely goes both ways.
The author does grab your attention - even if it's the wrong kind.

A Different Side To The Story, May 7, 2008
This review is from: Down Low Sistahs (Perfect Paperback)
Nicor thought he found the perfect woman when he meets Tamar. After six months of dating, Nicor finds out that Tamar has a girlfriend on the side. This revelation leads to their break-up and Nicor down a rocky road in search of a woman to spend the rest of his life with. He moves on to a new girlfriend named Alexxus but once again, Nicor is deceived due to her confusion about her sexuality. Nicor becomes so tired and frustrated by the down low sistahs that he pens a song about his own experiences. As Nicor approaches superstardom, Tamar enters back into the picture with a surprise of her own. What will the future hold for Nicor and Tamar?
Down Low Sistahs is an innovative storyline by Wakiem Freeman. Freeman gives readers a unique twist to the down low phenomenon by focusing on women on the down low instead of the men. This story is full of raw and humorous dialogue that will have readers laughing out loud. Freeman included many topics in this story such as the danger of sex with underage girls and HIV. This story shows that one of the many downfalls of women living this lifestyle is sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV. But this novel would have been a lot better if Nicor's own wanton sexual behavior with these random women was properly addressed. Also, Nicor's sudden successful music career and the ending of this story were a bit unrealistic. All in all, Down Low Sistahs is still a quick and entertaining read for those who would like to read something a little different.

Men watch your women..Wakiem has opened a can of worms!!, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Down Low Sistahs (Perfect Paperback)
Wakiem has written a exciting novel about women on the downlow...we here so much about the brothas well watch out because the sistahs are creepin as well.
Nicor just seems to have a awful time with the ladies. In Down Low Sistahs Nicor desperately wants a steady relationship, but what he continues to find are women who are confused about there sexual orientation, and fails to pass this info on to Nicor.
From Tamara his woman of six months, to Alexxus a girlfriend with a husband, children, and a girlfriend this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's gets so bad the man has to put his frustrations on paper which turns into a NO.1 hit on the R&B charts.
Wakiem has gone were no other author has gone thus far...he's turned on some mens radar's.... ladies watch out!!

Be Careful My Brothers, Because What Goes Around , Comes Around And it Dosen't Take Long, April 17, 2008
This review is from: Down Low Sistahs (Perfect Paperback)
Just when you thought you heard it all with women having problems with their men being on the down low, Urban Fiction's finest, Wakiem Freeman, takes a very popular topic and turns the tables by giving you a very raw point of view through the male perspective in his new novel, Down Low Sistahs.
Since listening to a radio talk show in regards to the topic "Are there any good black men left on the planet earth?" Nicor decides to turn a new leaf and be a one-woman man, especially after six months of dating the woman of his dreams, Tamar. Unfortunately, Tamar brings Nicor's world to a surprising turn when she hits him with a devastating bombshell on his 25th birthday. Not only was she cheating on him during the duration of their relationship, but was involved with...............another woman.
Following the advice of his homie, the young-girl chasing Demetri, Nicor falls back into his old ways and starts playing the field again. Through out his bed hopping, headboard banging, one night stand-experiences, to his surprise, Nicor starts to discover that all of the women he has been dealing with are ALL on the down low. This really starts to push him to the brink and make him question, "Are there ANY good STRAIGHT women left on the planet earth?"
Nicor soon starts growing inspired to write a song titled, "I Need To Know", which hits the top of the R&B charts. But just when he starts to make sense of his own warped-reality with down low sistahs, his old girlfriend, Tamar drops back into his life with yet another bombshell.
Even though some of us had expected reading about a female's perspective on being on the down low, we felt it was still very intriguing and refreshing for Wakiem Freeman to give us the straight male's perspective through Nicor's eyes. Nicor was undoubtedly a very emotional character, who took his personal situations seriously. Even though he was a character we could not really relate too, Wakiem puts you into Nicor's shoes and automatically makes you empathize with what he was going through. A least favorite character of ours was Alexxus, who was not only portrayed as a very needy and desperate character, but also tries convincing Nicor that he was her true one and only, but turns out to have a husband, children and on the down low to top it off.
Wakiem also brings up some interesting sexual topics, including the anal-sex that Nicor seemed to enjoy having the most of with his female partners. You would also think in the straight world, a bisexual woman would be every straight man's fantasy, but that definitely was not the case with Nicor. Wakiem Freeman also opens the door to questions we are dying to get answered, such as: "Why is Nicor a magnet to down low women?" and "Why are people on the down low anyway?" So if you want to read a book that will not only peak your curiosity, but have you giving your neighbor or even your sister a second look, then look no further, Down Low Sistahs are waiting for you.
