Perkin's lone solo album showcases a true legend at his best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Down in Mississippi (Audio CD)
Recorded and produced in 1996 and 1997 by blues enthusiast, Matthew Block, this very well may be Pinetop's only solo record. In it, he is able to really show off his great right-hand rolls and boogie woogie riffs. The album has a nice balance of ballads, blues and boogie with the air of an old-time barrelhouse session. This is a wonderful document of a blues artist still in his prime.

This review is from: Down in Mississippi (Audio CD)
Pinetop Perkins, the king of blues/boogie piano, the bluesman has been playing the blues since 1927 with the likes of Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, and numerous other blues artist, Professor Longhair was sure to learn a trick or two from this music great. "Down In Mississippi" is an excellent solo effort from Perkins, song after song, melody after melody, is heard from the beginning to the end, flowing and displaying a variety of different styles, ragtime, boogie, delta... Perkins is a natural technician on the keys with a surprisingly good blues-style voice. The songs are basically open chords, mostly in the keys of C and G, this recording is also an excellent educational reference for aspiring musicians like myself, for guitar and especially blues harp. Give this Pinetop Perkins recording a spin, it's an essential, thirteen songs of pure entertainment with good audio...Pinetop Perkins is still alive and kicking at the ripe old age of 95, just recently recording a new release with Willie "big eyes" Smith.
