Editorial Reviews

The Blind Boys of Alabama explore the sounds of the birthplace of jazz and R&B on this studio album: Down In New Orleans. One of the longest-running groups in the world since the 1930s, the Blind Boys came back stronger than ever at the turn of the 21st century after giving a series of rock numbers a gospel makeover. This rousing, optimistic and spiritually-driven record features high-profile New Orleans guest artists Allen Toussaint, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The Hot 8 Brass Band, as well as session musicians from New Orleans. 12 tracks. Time Life Records. 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars 70 Years of Joy March 6, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Formed 70 years ago with only Jimmy Carter remaining from the original group, these guys continue to provide joyfull uplifting music. This Soul/Gospel/Jazz influenced collection is helped along by being recorded in The Big Easy with assistance from Allen Toussaint,Hot 8 Brass Band ,the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and a hot rhythm section.
Any one who enjoys good music will enjoy this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down In New Orleans with The Blind Boys of Alabama January 30, 2008
Format:Audio CD
With some amazing New Orleans musicians (even Allen Toussaint!) the Blind Boys of Alabama create one of their BEST albums yet. My favorite song on the album is "How I Got Over", the soulful vocals and bluesy music feels like a sunday morning gospel and blues concert. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best work yet! February 5, 2008
Format:Audio CD
This HAS to be The Blind Boys of Alabama's best work yet! The album is full of amazing talent, including the Hot 8 Brass Band, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and even Allen Toussaint. My favorite song is "Free At Last," which I just saw them do on Conan O'Brien last week. If you're looking for a Blind Boys' record to buy this is the one - you won't be disappointed, I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Blind Boys of Alabama, Down in New Orleans
Good tape but I expected a better quality sound. I thought the tape would be more "MOVING" but it really isn't. The songs are good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A record as good as its cover
Had to give a shoutout to the great cover art, which looks like a weathered sign, and matches the rugged red clay harmonies on the record. Read more

As a Blind Boys fan, it's not surprising that I enjoy this CD but having their vocals combined with New Orleans-style music makes this special. I highly recommend this.
