Sonny Boy Williamson was one of the giants of the blues. He played with Robert Johnson in the 1920s and 1930s and was a major figure on the blues scene until his death in the 1960s. In the 1940s he was one of the hosts of the King Bisquit Show, an influential radio music show broadcast from Helena, Arkansas.

Williamson has been cited as a major influence by, among others, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page, although it's probably accurate to say he had a major influence on all the leading artists in the British and American blues revivals of the 1960s and 1970s. His importance in the history of the blues cannot be understated.

This album is an excellent introduction to Williamson's music. It is a 2 CD set with Williamson's classic album Down And Out Blues, released by Chicago's Chess Records in 1958, on one CD - along with some bonus tracks - and 22 remastered Williamson singles, originally released in the early 1950s on the Trumpet label, on the 2nd CD.

The sound quality on the Chess recordings is good. The sound quality on the Trumpet recordings is not as good, but it's acceptable for material recorded in 1951-53 by a small record label, probably on a shoestring budget.

There seems to be a major resurgence of interest in 1970s music among today's 15-25 year olds. A local CD store owner told me recently that his store sells more Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd CDs to guys in that age range than it sells of any contemporary artists. Perhaps the younger guys who are listening to bands like Led Zeppelin would be interested in checking out some of players Robert Plant and Jimmy Page cite as influences. If so, Sonny Boy Williamson is one of the artists they should check out.

This 2 CD set is an excellent introduction to Williamson`s music. For those who already know about Sonny Boy Williamson, this is also one of those classic blues albums that should be in any blues fan's collection.

Sonny Boy Williamson #2 was already an established performer by the time his contract was acquired by Chess Records in 1955. Beginning in 1948 he was featured on "King Biscuit Time," a radio show broadcast every day at 12:15 PM by KFFA out of Helena, Arkansas. The program was popular with the field hands working the cotton plantations of the Mississippi Delta. The program allowed Williamson to advertise local gigs which were always well attended. His popularity led to a reocording contract with the Jackson, Mississippi, based Trumpet Records in 1951; all of his singles for that label are collected on one of the 2 discs here, remastered for increased fidelity. Several of his most enduring blues ("Nine Below Zero," "Eyesight to the Blind," "Mighty Long Time") are included.

The Trumpet operation foundered in 1954; Williamson's contract was sold to a creditor and purchased by Chess Records. That label's higher standards of fidelity, musicianship, and promotional muscle increased Williamson's profile in the R & B marketplace. "Down and Out Blues" was the first LP issued under his name. A collection of singles released in 1959 (Chess was slow to pick up on the LP craze) it was also a best seller. Williamson's downhome harmonica stylings married well with the big-city sophistication of Chess' pool of seasoned session musicians, creating some of the finest Chicago blues ever heard. This is a stellar collection of downhome blues and R & B. If you do not have any of this legendary bluesman's work in your music library "Down and Out Blues" is a good place to start.

When I ordered this CD I needed some Sonny Boy Williamson back in my music collection after it had been ripped off previously. This compilation more than satisfies the need. This is classic blues the way it was meant to be played and enjoyed. I'm going to cover a lot of these tunes on stage with my band.
