Biography

The gals dug Axl and the musicians dug Slash, but the man in the back, guitarist Izzy Stradlin, was just as much an integral part of Guns N' Roses. Stradlin's exit from the group in 1991 also signaled the beginning of the end for G N' R, as they became more of the "Axl Rose Show" and less of a full-fledged band. Born in Lafayette, Indiana on April 8, 1962, Stradlin (whose real name is Jeff Isbell)… Read more in Amazon's Izzy Stradlin Store

Product Description

The Third Outing from the Former Guns N Roses Guitarist is Yet More Evidence as to who in that Band Embodied the Real Essence of Rock N Roll. Stradlin Gets Down and Dirty Once More with his Gut Wrenching Chords and Power Tunes. It May Be Axl-less, but it Carries on the Spirit and the Fire that Used to Be One of the Best with One of the Best There Is.

4.0 out of 5 stars His best since "117 Degrees", July 30, 2003
This album is somewhat less punk-influenced than its immediate predecessors, and more reminicent of Izzy's first solo album, the magnificent "Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds".

It doesn't have quite as many memorable songs, and it is perhaps less musically versatile, but "On Down The Road" holds its own with tracks like the tough rocker "You Bet'Cha", the ballad "Sweet Caress", the fine, acoustic "Got Some News", a cover of the Glimmer Twins' "Please Go Home", and the driving title track.

It is almost on par with Izzy's fine second album, "117 Degrees", and better, more varied, and more accessible (in my opinion) than his two Japanese albums "Ride On" and "River".
3 1/2 stars (and when it's .5 you round up to the nearest whole number!).

5.0 out of 5 stars get on down the road with izzy, September 11, 2002

i gotta admit that i was torked about another izzy import. WAKE UP people! izzy is the real deal! the dude writes, plays, and sings! he isn't out for a quick buck or the latest trend. he writes great rock tunes! period. unfortunately we have to get these great tunes via import! his latest opus, "on down the road" is one great little disc. 10 songs. no frills rock n' roll! can't pick a favorite they're all great! the one phrase that best describes this set is "stonesy." izzy definitely sounds like the son of mick and keef. the world needs more izzy! pick this one up for sure! less import titles...... more izzy!

3.0 out of 5 stars If you like Rolling Stones or Black Crowes then here it is, January 20, 2005
By Sensitive Lightning (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
Let me begin my review by saying that the song "Sweet Caress" is by far the best song by an ex-GNR member, including anything from Velvet Revolver. Izzy did a great job with this ballad.

When I listen to Izzy's recent albums (117 degrees, River, and On Down the Road), I haven't yet heard Ride On, I feel it's kind of like listening to Paul McCartney without John Lennon. Izzy needs a hard rock edge to his music, in other words, he needs a Slash or Axl to liven up his songs.

Most of his songs are just too folksy. Too much sliding guitar riffs. It sounds like a southern rock/country album, which is fine if that's the market he wants to cater to. I just really wish he would put some heavy artillery into his songs, something more like Appetite for Destruction where the songs just grabbed you and really got you excited.

This album has four good songs: Monkeys, Sweet Caress, Coke'n, and Lot To Learn. It also includes a cover of the Rolling Stones song "Please Go Home".

Overall, you should get the album just for the song Sweet Caress alone. Otherwise, don't expect another GNR album here, even with Duff McKagan playing bass.
