His best since "117 Degrees",
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews
This review is from: On Down the Road (Audio CD)
This album is somewhat less punk-influenced than its immediate predecessors, and more reminicent of Izzy's first solo album, the magnificent "Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds".
It doesn't have quite as many memorable songs, and it is perhaps less musically versatile, but "On Down The Road" holds its own with tracks like the tough rocker "You Bet'Cha", the ballad "Sweet Caress", the fine, acoustic "Got Some News", a cover of the Glimmer Twins' "Please Go Home", and the driving title track. It is almost on par with Izzy's fine second album, "117 Degrees", and better, more varied, and more accessible (in my opinion) than his two Japanese albums "Ride On" and "River". 3 1/2 stars (and when it's .5 you round up to the nearest whole number!).

i gotta admit that i was torked about another izzy import. WAKE UP people! izzy is the real deal! the dude writes, plays, and sings! he isn't out for a quick buck or the latest trend. he writes great rock tunes! period. unfortunately we have to get these great tunes via import! his latest opus, "on down the road" is one great little disc. 10 songs. no frills rock n' roll! can't pick a favorite they're all great! the one phrase that best describes this set is "stonesy." izzy definitely sounds like the son of mick and keef. the world needs more izzy! pick this one up for sure! less import titles...... more izzy!

A good album, but definitely not on par with AFD,

This is a response to an earlier review that stated this album is better than "Appetite For Destruction". Maybe that person was just trying to get a reaction, and that's fine. But there is no way you can compare this to a classic like Appetite. As far as "On Down the Road", it is a very good album. Izzy knows what kind of music he wants to do and he does it very well. It seemed like a long time between the JuJu Hounds and 117 degrees, but Axl has proved that Izzy was working rather quickly! Pick up this album if you're an Izzy/Slash/Duff/GNR fan, it's definitely worth it.

rocks off,
This review is from: On Down the Road (Audio CD)
This disk is great. Tracks 3 through 8 are excellent, as good as anything he has done. Disk highlights include coke'n, sweet caress,on down the road, and the rockers include way to go (perfect keith imitation) and monkeys. It is expensive but worth it.

***Izzy was to Guns n Roses what Dee Dee was to the Ramones: the heart of the band as far as writing the songs. Every album he has recorded is a good (if not great) example of how good and simple rock can be; This album, On Down The Road, his fifth solo album, is no different. Actually, it is the best he's ever recorded, because it has THE BEST SONG OF THE LAST TEN YEARS on it: Sweet Caress. What a nice song! It is so beautiful! Just as good as Patience, if not better. The album has also other GREAT tracks, like You Betcha (great rocker), Monkey's ("This town is full of monkeys, living in a zoo"), On Down The Road (another great laid-back rocker Izzy-style), Coke'n (yet another good track) and Lot To Learn (this is almost as good as Sweet Caress). And Izzy sings better than EVER! The other tracks are NOT on the superb level of these, but are definetely GOOD, wich makes this album - as HIGH PRICED as it is - a VERY worthy purchase! Oh, if you happen to enjoy good rock, get your hands also on Dee Dee Ramone's album "I hate freaks like you". IT IS SO GOOD, and just like this album, very, very UNKNOWN to pretty much everyone.

If you like Rolling Stones or Black Crowes then here it is,

Let me begin my review by saying that the song "Sweet Caress" is by far the best song by an ex-GNR member, including anything from Velvet Revolver. Izzy did a great job with this ballad.
When I listen to Izzy's recent albums (117 degrees, River, and On Down the Road), I haven't yet heard Ride On, I feel it's kind of like listening to Paul McCartney without John Lennon. Izzy needs a hard rock edge to his music, in other words, he needs a Slash or Axl to liven up his songs. Most of his songs are just too folksy. Too much sliding guitar riffs. It sounds like a southern rock/country album, which is fine if that's the market he wants to cater to. I just really wish he would put some heavy artillery into his songs, something more like Appetite for Destruction where the songs just grabbed you and really got you excited. This album has four good songs: Monkeys, Sweet Caress, Coke'n, and Lot To Learn. It also includes a cover of the Rolling Stones song "Please Go Home". Overall, you should get the album just for the song Sweet Caress alone. Otherwise, don't expect another GNR album here, even with Duff McKagan playing bass.

Best Izzy Album since 117 Degrees and Ju Ju Hounds,

Best album from Izzy since 117 degrees and Ju Ju Hounds. Sounds the most like Gn'R lies type of writing and great Guitar Tone. A must have and hopefully we will get this in the states not as an import. Izzy Stradlin is straight rock. Keep the albums coming Izzy.

On Down The Road By Izzy Stradlin,
This review is from: On Down the Road (Audio CD)
It starts with a hard hitting rock'n roll tune You Betcha. Sweet Caress is beautiful surprise, when it first started I thought "What's This!" It totally captured my attention on the first chord. Coke'n I love it. It's a catchy sing along with song. Izzy sings Got Some News so gently you can tell that whatever the news is its going to be baaad. Lot To Learn another totally rockin' song. It is a totally great mix of tunes. I love this whole cd but alas I am prejudiced. I love everything Izzy does.

...This is yet ANOTHER excellent cd from Mr.Isabelle."On Down the Road" is wonderful, and "Coke'n" is tremendous, but, as usual, he has created a cd that you can just stick on, and play all the way thru, without having to search for tracks that you like. IT'S ALL GOOD - just order it - it's worth it !!...
