Not the real thing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Down The Road (Live) (Audio CD)
Recently, the real Guess Who--meaning Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, and other original members--reunited. So why would you want this soulless, lifeless attempt by former member Jim Kale to tread on the true classic band's name? In addition, Kale isn't even on the thing! Wait for the video and live album from the 2000 reformation to be released, buy Live at the Paramount or American Woman, but forget this dreck. One further footnote: Carl Dixon is the worst replacement for a replacement for a replacement for a replacement for a replacement for a replacement singer in the history of rock. Get it?

That's the morbid curiosity that brought me to purchase this CD. I guess I just wanted to hear this band try to put these songs over as their own. Frightening. I mean, really, it's not that it's BAD, but how can ANYONE but Burton Cummings sing these songs as "The Guess Who?"One play and filed along with the multitudes of [junk] that I keep for amusement. Definitely stay away from this one if you really want "The Guess Who" but definitely grab it if you want to watch them pull the bodies out of the flaming car from the other side of the road.

The Guess Who IS Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman. This particular CD is homemade, released on a homemade label. Don't believe any review that says this is worth anything at all--any of Jim Kale's bands had no artistic credibility at all. Ask yourself this: This particular recording has five musicians, NONE OF WHICH had anything to do with the original recordings by the orginal Guess Who--except the drummer, who didn't write or sing. So why would you want to bother. As for this being the band's "best lineup," this isn't the Guess Who. Get this CD outta print--it's worthless. Don't be a sucker!!

Any record by a group without the original lead singer/songwriter and guitar player
is just a garage band doing covers of the original songs. This record is no different. The definitive live records for The Guess Who are "Live At The Paramount" and "Running Back Through Canada." Any of these other "Live" efforts PALE by comparison. You might as well call the band Guess Who Revisited." Skip this record and buy the two I've mentioned here. I'd give Zero stars if I could do that.

The name says it all...so..."guess who's in the band"...just the original drummer,
This review is from: Down The Road (Live) (Audio CD)
This is a PERFECT example of the way that one lone member puts together a band to go out and tour and misrepresent themselves by posing as the original band who made the legend...these current guys never wrote the hits and never sang the hits and is very doubtful they were even born when the original band was in their heyday 1969-74...
It just really burns me the way people get misled by BS like this... This band should be called THE GARY PETERSON BAND......They might be competent musicians....but they are no contest for the original guys....those guys had the talent and creativity to compose ..record and sell the hits...these guys are just some unknown karaoke wannabes or studio cats who Gary pulled together to go on a tour. You know what would be a REAL pisser offer???? If you went to see these guys and found out that ONLY the drummer was ever on any of the bands albums....and you'd be wondering why they didn't really sound like the real deal.... The rest of the band knew when it was time to graciously bow out and retire.....Gary needs to realize it's over and change the name. The band (including Gary)...has since reunited for a mini concert tour....circa the "Rain Dance" era lineup....and it sounded pretty good...You can find it on a double cd...in case you're interested.. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!

Finally: fresh perfomance,

I would like to review this album from two sides. As a fan, and as a musician (from 1970). As a fan the first thing I do when I have the chance to visit Europe or USA, is find any CD Store and ask for any Guess Who album. I think this is enough to qualify myself as a fan
As a musician I know that one of the most important to reach audience (besides know how to play your instrument, of course) is share the good vibe you are living with your pals on stage in any moment. If something goes wrong between pals, is a fact that public will notice and receive the situation. You play well when you like the song and when you feel comfortable with your partners, location and audience. State of mind So, this Guess Who treasure has that. Good vibe, dynamic and fresh perfomances, all stuff I could not find in previous live situation, even with the beloved icon Burton Cummings who is still in my top five best singers, but now, sharing position with Carl Dixon. And so what if this "new" Guess Who did not wrote the songs? Elvis did? Yes a couple. Anything to say about Elvis besides was the King? It's all about perfomance, the way the artist touch minds and hearts So, my friends take a sit and enjoy this fresh album. This is it. No Burton Cummings? I do not care, I thank him a lot and I love him, but as I said before I won something else: The way the band reach my soul and make me sing and dance. Living today, as I am. Move on people, stop living in the past, enjoy today!

In 1999, this album introduced a new line-up for THE GUESS WHO, the best Canadian rock group of all times. Garry Peterson, Carl Dixon, Dale Russell, Leonard Shaw and Ken Sinnaeve may not be as famous as Burton Cummings or Randy Bachman, who left the boat a long time ago, but are first rate musicians who manage to deliver the 16 hits included here with outstanding precision, even updating the material to a more contemporary sound (Shakin' All Over and American Woman are great examples of this). Garry Peterson exact beat, Dale Russell hard rocking guitar work and, above all, the amazing voice of Carl Dixon make this extremely well recorded live album a must for true GUESS WHO fans, though maybe not for Burton Cummings ones.

Definitive Guess Who,

More than any other live album in the band's long history--and certainly better than that terrible "Limping Back Through Canada" fiasco-- this cd neatly encapsulates the band's early history with the best lineup they ever had. An awesome set by some very talented musicians.

excellent live versions of catalog songs,

this cd is a great trip through the guess who catalog. the big hits, the not so big hits, and some obscure tunes that haven't been done live for years. the band was very serious with this recording, and it shows. vocals are very well done, as is the playing. baring a re-issue on cd of the eighties reunion live lp, or a new reunion here in 2000, any REAL GUESS WHO FAN, would enjoy having this recording. everyone loves a little canadian beaver!
