Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This version of the classic children’s song expands the traditional rhyme by featuring a variety of modes of transportation, not just the “little puffer-bellies.” Beginning with the traditional “down by the station, early in the morning,” readers are introduced to different vehicles on each two-page spread. School buses, tractor trailers, excavators, jumbo jets, sailboats, race cars, fire engines, and rocket boosters are all highlighted with an original four-stanza rhyme. Each rhyme works well with the original cadence that many parents, teachers, librarians, and youngsters are familiar with. For example, “Down by the water / Early in the morning / See the bobbing sailboats all in a row / See the salty skipper pulling up the mainsail. / Flap flap splash splash! Off we go!” Remkiewicz’s lively watercolor illustrations add energy to the rhymes, and storytimes, preschools, and kindergarten classrooms will be requesting this title, as will budding transportation enthusiasts. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Shauna Yusko

Down by the Station, written by Jennifer Riggs Vetter and illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz is fabulous. Yep it only takes that one word to describe this one. You're going to have the words stuck in your head for the next 2 days, but it's well worth it.

An expanded version of a classic rhyme, kids that love boats planes, trucks, and trains will totally be loving this one. The rhyme reads almost like a song and it's definitely one that you and your kids will probably know word for word after a few readings.

"Down by the depot, early in the morning
See the yellow school buses all in a row
See the school bus driver warming up the engine
Vroom vroom
Beep beep!
Off we go!"

And so it repeats with different modes of transportation on each page, creating a fabulous rhyming book with adorable illustrations. A really simple concept, Down by the Station will appeal to your toddlers, but also to slightly older kids as the rhyming is a lot of fun.

Fantastic for home reading and for toddler storytimes.

My three and one year old sons love this book. I sing the words to the tune of the song and they love it! The illustrations are great and the places they go are great...firehouse, racetrack, sailboats, construction site with excavators, etc. Definitely topics little boys love. Update: we have had this book for over 2 months now and our one year old brings this book to us multiple times a day so we can read it to him. I love this book!

Were given this as a gift from a friend who said it was her 3 year old boy's favorite. It is now definitely one of my 2 year old boy's favorites! We have already gifted it to a number of different people ourselves. My 4 and 6 year old daughters enjoy it, too, but not anywhere near as much as my son.

My toddler is CRAZY about this book! We're on our third copy and have also given this as a gift. But I can only give 4 stars because the pages and binding tear SO easily, and at its size (quite large), a toddler really has a lot of page to turn "carefully" which isn't likely to happen. I've had to reinforce all of the page edges and the binding with scotch tape! Also, the book should come with the audio CD or, better yet, a link and code to download the audio CD. That's the best part, my toddler loves to read along with the song!

This is a very cute expansion on the little song about trains. The artist did a charming job of creating a cast of characters who crop up throughout the book. They even appear in a gallery on the end papers!! It's fun for kids to look at those characters and to guess what vehicle they drive later in the book. I have been reading it with a two-year-old who is a great train enthusiast and he and I both love it! We have also played and sung the song on the guitar together.

My two yr old twins favorite book. They both love it so much that my son asks for the book as soon as he wakes up in the morning and also wants to read it before going to bed. Even my 6 yr old son enjoys it. My friends 2 yr old daughter came to our house and read the book once and now it is her favorite book too. The wonderful illustration and familiar rhyme makes it interesting to read it over and over again( which you would be doing once you get this book.)

My 2 year old son loves it. It's great since he goes through phases loving trains one moment and buses the next. In this book, he can skip to the page of transportation he likes best (rocket ships, trains, buses, trucks, diggers, fire trucks, race cars, etc.) We read it EVERY night. He's learned words, different vehicles and counting through this book!
