Angus and Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane [Official Music Video]

Biography

Let’s cut to the chase. the captivating third, self titled album from ANGUS & JULIA STONE, is the best record the siblings have ever made. A record born of spontaneity, and totally unplanned.

“It took a while to get to a place where we thought it was a good idea,” they admit. “We were enjoying the time apart, enjoying our different directions. There was no ... Read more in Amazon's Angus & Julia Stone Store

Editorial Reviews

2010 release from the Australian siblings. Travelling has been an integral part of the Stone's musical story so it's not surprising they opted to record Down The Way in a number of diverse locations around the globe; an old sawmill on the river banks of Fowey in Cornwall, a studio in Brooklyn, a water tank in Coolangatta, their second home - London - and Queens in New York. Down The Way marks their debut as producers, taking full control of their sound without losing the spirit of what made the first record so special. There has been a subtle shift of gear, represented by a growing confidence in their abilities as artists and the music follows suit as it flows easily through sparse and rich textured arrangements without losing any of its etherealness and charm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Siblings all grown up April 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In 2007, Angus & Julia Stone released their debut record, A Book like This. With a focus on fairy tale themes and simplistic instrumentation, the album was a solid debut, but inevitably forgettable. Three years later, Angus and Julia have returned with a great deal of experience under their belts and what seems to be a lifetime of knowledge on the topics they were just beginning to understand in their debut.

Trading vocals with her brother on every other song, Julia takes the lead track with "Hold On." Her vocals are soft, airy and innocent sounding with similarities to Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O. With a lush string section reminiscent of Sia's "Breathe Me" building in the background, Angus & Julia have definitely expanded their instrumentation since their last release. The following track, "Black Crow," gives Angus a chance to shine. With a likeness to Kings of Leon's "On Call," "Black Crow" lays down a slow groove that remains unaltered throughout, but builds on a dynamic level that keeps the song interesting.

Ringing in at 66 minutes long, the Stone siblings have given us a great deal of material to absorb. The weakness in the record occurs in the middle when creativity takes a backseat to genre experimentation and repetition. Tracks like "And the Boys" and "Walk It Off" have moments of beauty, but rapidly become lackluster. Ending with "The Devil's Tears," however, is somewhat redeeming for those patient enough to play through the remainder of the thirteen total tracks on this release. Angus and Julia share a quiet duet that relates Down the Way to their first album while placing their maturation on display.

Down the Way is a vast improvement from Angus & Julia Stone's first release.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album of the season October 21, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Down The Way feels like laying in bed on a Saturday afternoon. Siblings Angus and Julia combine imaginative lyrics with acoustic instruments to put the listener in a calm daze. Julia's childlike, innocent vocals are well balanced by Angus's relaxed harmonies.
"Big Jet Plane" is one of the most memorable songs on the album. It combines simple melodies with suggestive lyrics to flawlessly balance naïve and mature. "On the Road" is another satisfying song from the album. Julia and Angus's harmonies combine the style of the Mamas and Papas with a modern acoustic-folk style incomparable to other albums out today.
Down the way is a mellow album that will pass by in what feels like only minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite A&J album! January 25, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I seriously will never get tired of listening to this album. One of my most favorite songs of all time is "Draw Your Swords." I really hope that A&J do more music together after their current solo phase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate Music September 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I came upon Angus and Julia's music via a website offering a "first listen" of Julia's solo CD, By the Horns. I liked that so much that I looked her up and found that she also sings with Angus. That led me to this CD. The songs are beautiful and sung with such passion. I've tried to listen to other new music I have, but I keep coming back to this. The more you play it, the more you will love it. I also highly recommend Angus' solo CD, Broken Brights. Solo and together, their CDs are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and Catchy November 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really like this album by a duo from Australia. It held up to multiple listens well. I like Angus's songs and voice better, but I like the way Angus and Julia trade off songs and complement each other, backing each other up as a brother and sister team, which is an unusual duo. It is mood music reminiscent of a simpler time and the innocence of youth. Angus gives a tip of the hat to Neil Young and Heart of Gold. I believe he took some inspiration from Young's early work, both the lyrical side and the guitar jams. Julia's voice reminds me of Anais Mitchell. It takes a little getting used to, but it's good. I like all of the songs. Standouts for me are Yellow Brick Road, Draw Your Swords, the Devil's Tears, Hold On, and I'm Not Yours. Jet Plane was the one that caught my attention initially on a youtube video, but that one did wear out due to its minimalist structure and theme. I classify this as folk rock. You don't hear much of that coming out these days. I hear the sixties influence and it works in the current day context. It sounds new and fresh.

I discovered this duo a while ago, but wasn't sure if I wanted to buy a full album. I'm so glad I did. I love every song. Their melodies and voices just make me feel so good. I love beautiful, easy listening, relaxing music and this is just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down The Way/ Angus and Julia Stone May 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The sound quality of this CD is simply "Outstanding"! This is one of the better recordings available, if you have a mid to High End sound system this is a great CD to showcase your system, especially played back through JRiver from your computer hard drive to your home stereo/surround system. The music from this brother sister duo is absolutely stellar, do yourself a favor and purchase this CD, you'll never look back....it's that good!
