It's about a boy named Jason and his brothers, living in Dawson City. They have their own sawmill called Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill, where they work to make a living. One day all of the brothers were at a place eating, and a guy starts to kick this dog sitting there, so Ethan, the oldest brother, tells the man not to kick the dog. They got into a pushing match, but somebody in the crowd yelled at Ethan not to fight the guy, because he was pushing a former boxer Sydney Mauler. Then somebody said they should have a boxing match, and they had one two weeks later. Ethan ended up winning and becoming famous. He stopped working at the mill and started to drink and gamble a lot. He was winning everyday, and then one day he started to lose, and everyday he lost more and more until he was broke. Then a lawyer took their mill by having Ethan sing a paper when he was drunk, so they lost their mill. Jason's old friend Jamie Dunavant comes back to Dawson City and they fall in love. Jason told her he was going to Nome for to make money to buy the mill back. Jamie then found a contest. It was a race to Nome for two people and $20,000 the prize. It would be able to buy the mill back. So can Jamie and Jason win the race and get the mill back? You'll have to read the book to find out.
The parts I liked were that there was a lot of adventure and I like adventure books. The parts I didn't like were that it was kind of a love story and there were some boring parts. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and love stories too. It`s the sequel of Jason's Gold, so if you liked that then you'll like this

3.0 out of 5 stars Life Threatoning Adventure, September 28, 2005

This book is about a teenage boy and girl who like each other. The boys name is Jason and the girls name is Jamie. Jason has been waiting for Jamie to come back to the north. When Jamie does finally come back to the north, they both decide to join a big race down to Nome. The winner of the race gets 20, 000 dollars. Jason needs this money to buy back his mill that he and his two brothers owned, but lost.
I liked this book because it was a suspenseful adventure. I didn't really like how it was a love story.
I can compare this book with Gary Paulsen's book; The River.
I would recommend this book to people who like suspense, adventure, and love stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rip-roaring read for those who love adventure, survival or wilderness living, November 8, 2011
This review is from: Down the Yukon (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: After reading Jason's Gold, I promised ds I would read the sequel to him sometime and here we are finally getting to it. A year and a half later! But he's more mature for Hobbs now and he wants me to read more books by him.

Though the word Yukon is in the title, it refers to the river not the territory, so don't mistake this book as taking place in Canada. The first in this series (and I'd say it's important to read them in order to get the full value of this sequel) takes places entirely in Canada while this one takes place entirely in Alaska, except for the beginning couple of chapters. Starting six months after the end of Jason's Gold this book has Jason and Jamie entering a race from Dawson City to Nome to win the grand prize of $20,000 which readers of the first book will know why they need the money.

Another well-written adventure with much descriptive language of the land and one gets a great feel for being there with them. Jason and Jamie are written as equals, there is hardly any distinction that they are male and female, though Hobbs does manage to write in an already affirmed relationship that they are a couple with a distinct future together. The majority of the book details their trip down the river and the obstacles they face along the way including bad guy Cornelius Donner from the first book. Touches upon the Nome, Alaska gold rush to a small extent, giving enough information to impart what it was like there at that time but this book concentrates more on the fictional story and the geographical location than the historical content as did Jason's Gold. A rip-roaring read for those who love adventure, survival or wilderness living. The book packs a walloping adrenaline filled climax that is sure to have you wanting to read more Will Hobbs. This mum and son are certainly looking forward to more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment!, June 17, 2008
This review is from: Down the Yukon (Paperback)
What a read! This one is likely to keep you reading right through to the end. I loved the historical references throughout, which gives the story a feeling of reality. The adventures just keep coming. I'm glad there is a sequal to Jason's Gold every bit as exciting as the original, and this is it!

There are three brothers and their names Jason, Ethan, Abraham. The three brothers' own a saw mill in Dawson. One day this man named Donner took the saw mill away from the three brothers and he wanted to the brothers' to sell the saw mill to him. So Jason was reading in the news paper about a race to Nome. The winner of the race will get 20,000 thousand dollars. Nome is located in Canada. Jason got a hold of a good friend her name is Jamie. So Jamie comes down the Yukon on a steam boat. She and Jason all that night got together and checked the canoe out to see if it was in good condition. They packed their boat all up with their stuff. Jason and Jamie took the canoe to the starting point and got in. The gun went boom! Jamie and Jason got in fist place going down the Yukon. They ran into a big cotton tree so they had to go around it. They were racing against Donner, Donner cut down a Burch tree and the trunk of the tree put a hole in their canoe. So they made a raft and went up stream and traded the raft for a Burch wood canoe. Jamie and Jason entered the ocean and got a kayak from the Eskimos. The two of them went down the ocean. They got out and ran towards the building. I'm not going to tell you what happens. If I tell you I'll ruin the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Ride..., October 30, 2001
By

This review is from: Down the Yukon (Hardcover)
Beginning in the city of Dawson in the Yukon, Jason and his dreamgirl, Jamie, paddle a canoe in a race to Nome against hundreds of others! The time is the gold rush at the turn of the 1900s in the Yukon territory. The setting is colorful, with nods to the gambling, drinking, and dancing that took place during the time. Names from the old west, such as Wyatt Earp and Calamity Jane appear in the tale that gives a good sketch of what was taking place at the time.

The story begins well with a confrontation between the brothers and the Sydney Mauler and carries along well, but it did not seem believable. When Jamie and Jason venture to race together, I wondered how a teenage boy and girl travelling together would have been perceived and was somewhat disappointed that this aspect was ignored. Though Down the Yukon is the sequel to Jason's Gold, it most defnitely stands on its own as a story, and for that Will Hobbs is to be commended... I look forward to reading more of his work.

Crazy James
