Great Debut,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

Downhere offers a worship-focused project for their debut. The songs focus on our relationship with God and the need to depend on Him. The lyrics will grab you and make you stop and think."Larger the Life" opens the CD with the simple reminder that the world around us bares witness to God and His power. Since God is larger then what is around us, we need Him in our lives. "Great Are You" is my personal favorite. It talks again about the power of God and then compares that power to us, putting us in our place and crying out about the greatness of God. "It makes me wonder/Who am I/And great are You." "Calmer of the Storm" is a prayer for faith that God is still in control when life seems to be out of control. "Breathing In" takes its name from the idea that when we die, we immediately take our first breath of eternal life in Heaven. The lyrics range from the simple and straight forward to the poetic. Either way, they will make you stop and think. My only real complaint with the CD is the lack of variety in musical styles. The songs tend to run together, with only a couple really standing out. This is a small complaint, really, because the words keep bringing me back to listen again and again. With a little musical variety, this could have been an outstanding debut. As it stands, this is still an great CD that hopefully marks the start of a long career.

Incredible harmonies and catchy rhythms!!!,

I first got this cd off Ebay because I had never heard of them but I knew they were new. When I first listened to it I was stunned--I hadn't heard much about them but yet they were spellbinding. Very reminiscent of Ten Shekel Shirt, Downhere would fit in anyone's cd collection who already has Jennifer Knapp, Sonicflood, Ten Shekel Shirt, and Caedmon's Call. Although this cd has yet to be discovered by the masses, it's going to become a must have. The songs that these guys write are bound to become part of the next generation of worship cd compilations. You just can't pass these guys by. Let their guitar driven vibes take over your soul as they have mine!!!

THumbs up from this newcomer!,

I am a relative newcomer to the Christian rock scene. I was looking for a cool, contemporary, real sound with a good, solid, not corny message. I listened to a lot of samples. And I made the perfect choice in downhere's self-titled album. Their sound reminds me at times of U2, Counting Crows, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater, even Springsteen (ok, I have a great imagination...).The first track, "Larger Than Life," is from the movie Joshua, which is where I heard these guys. Other great tracks are Protest to Praise, Raincoat and Making Me. I can listen to this stuff working out, even! The language is very common and natural, not preachy. Just right for me.

Downhere's self-titled release is stellar in all ways lyrically, musically and vocally. "Raincoat," "Great Are You," and "Calmer Of The Storm" are three of the best songs in a row that I've heard on a cd in a long time. I recommend this disc without reservation to anyone who wants depth and passion in the music they listen to.

This CD is spectacular. I find myself leaving in my CD player to listen to it over and over again. They have a light rock sound somewhat similar to Jars of Clay and their lyrics are great. The song Calmer of the Storm is one of my favorite songs right now by any artist. I cannot recomend this CD more. It is great.

Great lyrics rarely seen in the Christian music world...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Downhere (Audio CD)
What I love best about Downhere is that they are not afraid to write honest lyrics that don't try to cover up all the problems of the world. In the Christian music scene, there are way too many songs saying "Jesus makes all things great - so smile and be happy!"Downhere takes the road less-travelled and comes through with songs like "Protest to Praise" *quotes* "I'm wrestling my thoughts, I'm overcome - would you give me up? I'm asking, Lord, There's nowhere I sense your presence here..." Their songs acknowledge that being a believer in Christ doesn't mean life on Earth will be like a bed of roses. Not all the songs take such a serious route. Worship songs and praise choruses also abound - my favorites being "Free Me Up" and "Great Are You". This is a group who doesn't conform to the culturally accepted bubblegum feel-goody Christian songs. Two thumbs up to Downhere - you guys are awesome and I highly respect your decisions to value your art above your "marketability"! Stay true to your messages and you will go far!

Downhere came to my church last night and gave us an awesome concert, so natrally I bought the CD right then and there. The CD isn't as good as seeing them live, but that's always the case. Only regret I have about this CD is that a couple of songs that I loved aren't on here, but they were talking about hitting the studio fairly soon, and I will certainly pick up anything that this bands puts out as soon as I can get my hands on it. Downhere rocks!

I recently had the opportunity to listen to and hang out with Downhere this past weekend. They were unbelievable. Not only are they great muscians, but they are amazing, down to earth people. Every song on the CD is excellent, although my personal favorites are "Larger than Life" , "Free Me Up" , and "Great Are You". Help this great band get started by buying their CD today!!
