Wonderful Australian take on Beatles and Big Star!, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Downpayment on Future Glories (Audio CD)
Wow, this one took me by surprise. Thanks to a quick review in The Big Takeover (thanks again, Jack!) I picked up this 2004 release from Even, a compilation of their best moments from 1995 through 2003. I know, hundreds of bands are compared to the luminaries of chiming guitar rock - Beatles, Big Star, Byrds, etc - but this one is truly valid. This is joyous, rhythmic, sing-along great. The lyrics are a cut above the average. A lot of "power pop" gets (understandably) ignored because of trite lyrics or a sameness to the music that after a disc is over you can't remember what you just heard; it leaves no impression on the brain. But this one is different. It's really hard to explain why, but a lot of it has to do with truly memorably hooks and choruses, as well as quite nice singing. But the band's trump card, the one that gets them on my "repeat playlist," is those wonderful guitars just ringing and ringing away with propulsive rhythm that just doesn't let up. Cheer yourself up and check this disc out! If you're a power pop fan, or mid-60's Beatles fan, or just a guitar rock/pop fan, you won't regret it. If you hear it and don't agree, by all means come back to this review afterwards and click on the "this review was not helpful button." I can take it!
