Editorial Reviews

Review

'Downton Abbey is what television should be.' Simon Heffer, Telegraph 'The sets and costumes are ravishing, the attention to detail painstaking and the performances are brilliant. But above all, it's a cracking story.' The Times 'A sumptuous, accomplished piece of television' Guardian 'Sundays won't be the same without Downton: In an age of patronising, tacky television, Downton Abbey was a true British gem.' Max Hastings, Daily Mail --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

The full scripts of award-winning Downton Abbey, season one including previously unseen material

Downton Abbey has become an international phenomenon and the most successful British drama of our time. Created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, the first season delighted viewers and critics alike with stellar performances, ravishing costumes, and a gripping plot. Set in a grand country house during the late Edwardian era, season one of Downton Abbey follows the lives of the Crawley family upstairs and their servants downstairs as they approach the announcement of the First World War. Fellowes succeeds in not only entertaining his audience with a combination of sustained storylines and sharp one-liners but also in delivering a social commentary of British life. The scripts from season one give readers the opportunity to read the work in more detail and to study the characters, pace, and themes in depth. With extended commentary from Fellowes, highlighting key historical or dramatic details, this book gives invaluable insight, particularly for would-be screenwriters, into how Fellowes researched and crafted the world of Downton Abbey.

Julian Fellowes has crafted a wonderful book of the scripts from Season One of the hit show. This includes whole scenes and huge amounts of dialogue that were not filmed or were cut. (These portions are unobtrusively indicated by a bar to the left side of the script.) While some of it may not have been strictly necessary for the show, it's all of great interest to read and expands our knowledge of the characters, their back-stories and the goings-on at the manor. But the best part of the book are the extensive notes, remarks and comments by Lord Fellowes. I learned a lot about English country life and other matters, and it is fascinating to become privy to the creative process of this gifted and entertaining writer. I hope the later seasons are similarly published. Yes, I loved watching the series very much, but I promise you that this fine volume will extend your enjoyment in many directions. A surpassingly fine entertainment!

I purchased this book on pre-order after my Downton binge after watching the finale of Season 3 (UK time). I was elated when it finally arrived and dove into it almost immediate because I needed a Downton Fix. Yes, I realize how silly I sound. This script hit the spot and even exceeded my expectations.

I love the way this script is formatted, it runs alongside the series and if scenes were moved around, they are moved around in the script as well so you aren't confused. There are extra scenes included and are easily spotted by a small sidebar alongside it. In addition, there are comments about certain scenes through the book as well as a backstories behind the history of the times and why they did what, even confession a few mistakes they made. There are a few plots that become a bit clearer, including the one that befuddled me the most - what exactly DID Pamuk and Mary do? That answer was worth the book cost alone! Maybe I'm just stupid but I was always wondering how far they went and that is all answered here. Well, I think. LOL

Definitely pick this book up if you are a fan of Downton Abbey. Now if only Season 2's script wasn't SO far off in the distance!

I was so excited to see that this book had come out. I love the series and was looking forward to reading the scripts. These are the expanded versions - so there are some added extra scenes and dialogue. There is also some great commentary by the writer that explains certain scenes, character decisions, and historical facts. It also describes the scenes and characters. It is really fun to see what the original thought was behind the episodes that I love so much. I got the kindle version and it is great. I can't wait for the other 2 seasons to come out. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the show. It is also a great way to ease the withdrawl symptoms one has as they finish up a season and have to wait for the next one to come on!!

I love Downton Abbey and was rewatching season 1 recently. Then I discovered this-- the commentary from the author is such a treat. It's a new and different way to experience Downton. Very indepth, and you get to focus on the language, which is beautiful and crisp. The deleted scenes are fascinating as well. Good to see how editing works in the world of film/tv. I only wish they would hurry up and release book 2 in the US-- I get the impression it's already out in the UK.

Fellowes adds a great deal of backstory through his plentiful notes. (Who would have guessed that Molesley and Bates were footmen together before the Boer war?) It is also so fun to read (the many) lines which were cut from the broadcast of the US AND UK episodes. The missing lines add a level of depth to the original storyline and it is fun to see what some of the B characters would have said if they had not been limited by time. I'm a geek for endnotes, so I love it. People who aren't very thrilled with flipping back and forth between the script and the notes might not be as charmed by the format (Although the Kindle format (the only format I've seen) makes it very simple to go from text to notes and back). Hardcore Downton fans will love this.

I was very glad to finally find the Downton Stories and not a behind the scenes book. I have only just discovered the series and this book was great as I know have a better understanding as to the background story line. I only wish the next season was available as well! If you cannot find the reruns anywhere, this works just as well!

I really enjoyed the script book, especially the commentary by Fellowes. Great insight to what goes into the show, behind the scenes, and research. Can't wait for Season 2.
