i bought this about a year ago mainly because it had the only available recording by basquiat's (and vincent gallo's) band gray and have since bought an album by almost everyone else on on it. turned me on to whole new worlds i feel plain out of it to not have known about. downtown81 has impossibly beautiful breath to it: cuban funk, rap roots, no wave, artpunk minimalisms, expirimental jazz, electro, drone, japenese new wave, disco -all of which work impossibly coherently together. it is the ultimate comp because it is a stepping stone. (and its obscure, so you can pretend youve never heard of it a year from now when youre a music snob.) 85% of this is essential for people who like remotely good music and havent heard of these people. i really cant reccommend it enough.

ive spent my entire life revering the power of music (900+ albums, blahblah) and aside from the velvet underground, this is my desert island selection, this is my sole reccommendation, this is my main mixtape source, etc.

most of the tracks on this cd are very hard to find. super super stuff from the early 80s downtown scene. the live performances are great. i listen to this cd over and over.

You cant go wrong with this album if you are into the back side of early eighties music. If you have seen the movie you already know what I mean. This album is infused with the same spirit.
