Dow's Dictionary of Railway Quotations is an authoritative compendium of quotations about railways from 1608 to the present day. More than 3,400 entries are drawn from over 1,300 writers and speakers and a wide range of original sources both British and American—Acts of Parliament, poetry, songs, journals, advertisements, obituaries, novels, histories, plays, films, office memoranda, speeches, newspapers, television and radio broadcasts, and private documents and conversations.

Here Andrew Dow records remarkable, memorable words—from the well-known to the abstruse, from the commonplace to the vital. The selected quotations are arranged by subject matter and searchable by speaker, subject, and keyword.

Review

Dow has given us an extraordinary harvest of 3,700 entries to pick from... Magnificent book.

(Michael Binyon London Times 2006)

There are some 80 dictionaries of quotations on the market yet, until now, none has dealt with railways.

(Rail 2006)

This book is a quite astonishing compilation produced through time honoured research, enthusiasm, and dedication to railways.

(Railways Illustrated 2006)

One of the best of themed quotation books I have come across in a good while is Dow's Dictionary of Railway Quotations ... A rich assemblage of railway/railroad sayings.

(The "Quote...Unquote" Newsletter 2006)

This is the sort of book you don't realize you need until you see it.

(Railway Magazine 2006)

It will undoubtedly become a classic work of reference in its own right.

(NRM Rview 2006)

This is a major contribution to railroad literature, and I expect my copy to become dog-eared from frequent use.

(Classic Trains 2006)

The scale of Andrew Dow's achievement is truly staggering.

(IRSE 2006)

A fascinating book to dip into... Andrew Dow is to be congratulated.

(Times Literary Supplement 2006)

Dow has done us all a tremendous service in producing this fascinating compendium... it will be referred to pleasurably again and again.

(Journal of The Permanent Way 2006)

Especially recommended for railroad buffs, and also for railroad-related publications.

(Wisconsin Bookwatch 2006)

A labour of love... I cannot think of a better book as a bedside companion.

(Bruce I. Nathan SLS Journal 2006)

If you're trying to find the perfect rail-related quotation, look no further.

(Gena Holle International Railway Traveler 2006)

If you're looking for the perfect quote, or just enjoy getting lost in the thoughts of those who came before, this is a great place to start.

(Trains 2006)

It is so well put together and so keenly demonstrates the widespread impact of the railways.

(Christian Wolmar The Oldie 2006)

A useful tool in collections with a railway audience and for comprehensive reference collections.

(Choice 2006)

A most fascinating and distinctive book.

(Martin Barnes Railway and Canal Historial Society 2007)

Andrew Dow's new book is simply unique... authoritative, original and readable. Excellent.

(Back Track 2007)

Hours of unexpected delight... Dow delivers several good laughs and does not flinch from indecorous language or from mentioning acts that are usually passed over in silence.

(Craig Ash Railroad History 2006)

To fully comprehend the impact railways have had historically on civilization one needs to go no further than review this volume.

(American Reference Books Annual 2007)

A well conceived and executed effort that deserves a place on the bookshelves of many scholars and enthusiasts.

(Jeff Schramm Journal of Transport History 2007)

There is a wealth of material in this splendid book.

(Tony Chalcraft Reference Reviews 2008)

An enduring tribute to the railway authors of the past and to the men who so gallantly operated the trains.

(John H. White, Jr., former curator of transportation, National Museum of American History, author of The American Railroad Passenger Car; The American Railroad Freight Car; and American Locomotives 2005)

How we ever managed to understand the depth and breadth of railways before this book came along I'll never know. I recommend it to all who love railways—and even those who don't.

(Sir William McAlpine, Bt. )

Dow's Dictionary Of Railway Quotations is a gigantic compendium of quotations about railways from 1608 to the present day. Presenting more than 3,400 entries from over 1,300 writers and speakers and diverse British and American sources, from Acts of Parliament to poetry, songs, and journals, to obituaries, novels, histories, plays, films, radio broadcasts, private conversations, and much more, each selected quote vividly conveys a lasting impression that trains have had on human culture and the psyche, as well as basic economics and transportation. Organized according to subject, with an index for quick and easy lookup, Dow's Dictionary Of Railway Quotations is especially recommended for railroad buffs, and also for railroad-related publications, even railroad-themed personal blogs and online journals. My heart is warm with friends I make, / And better friends I'll not be knowing; / Yet there isn't a train that I wouldn't take, / No matter where it's going. -Edna St Vincent Millay, Travel, 1921.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dow's Dictionary of Railway Quotations, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Dow's Dictionary of Railway Quotations (Hardcover)
It's difficult to imagine the research involved in finding the thousands of items contained in this most entertaining book.

It fills a void in the railway literature that wasn't even known to exist.
