Book Description

After a lifetime of abuse and loss--from fights with other boys staged for his father's entertainment, to the death of his only son-- sixty one year old Vernon Davidson is angry. He's ready to get back at God, his paper mill coworkers, and everyone else in his north Louisiana town. Constantly drunk to numb his pain, the normally cautious Vernon spirals into recklessness; drinking on the job, facing down a younger man at work over a parking spot, scandalizing his former fellow Baptists with displays of his nakedness. Meanwhile Jody Davidson, Vernon's estranged nephew, struggles to survive a similarly tragic past by self-imposed exile, inserting himself into a new, seemingly different family a thousand miles away. The two men are reunited when Vernon agrees to retrieve Jody for his dying brother so they can say goodbye-and that's when they each embark on a journey that will ultimately change their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Redefining Southern Gothic September 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
Thank you, Brian Holers, for reminding us that the most haunting aspects of our lives are our own internal ghosts. This is a beautifully written, tender exploration of fathers and sons and of legacy, so rich in detail it makes me taste the scuppernongs. The author's voice is vibrant and touched with a wry humor that makes the pages fly by. An excellent first effort by a gifted writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Tale About Southern Men September 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
DOXOLOGY is a touching evocation of a place and culture known, heretofore, only to natives of North-Central Louisiana. With a deceptively simple yet original voice and spot on characterization, Holers takes an unflinching look at the genus "Southern Redneck." His tale of grandfathers, fathers, sons and brothers recreates family dynamics and memories in a way that feels painfully real, so the story becomes, in fact, a doxology, a song of praise for the male family bond, the emotional ties men conceal from the world and each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Engaging and Haunting Southern Tale March 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
"Doxology" is about carrying on.

Everyone has lost something or someone they thought they couldn't live without. Everyone must choose how they will carry on.

Jody Davidson receives a phone call from his uncle. He learns that his father is dying, and returns to his Louisiana hometown where his father and uncles work at the paper mill. Jody comes from a dysfunctional family, a family of strong, yet weak men. The family patriarch, E. L., handed down harsh sentences to his three sons. His sons, in turn, passed their pain onto their sons. Jody's Uncle Vernon leads a life of self-destruction and hate, unable to let go of the losses he's experienced. Jody's father, Leonard, lives in the past, talks about brother Pearl, and requests a family reunion. Jody tries to comply with his father's wishes by reaching out to his remaining relatives, including Uncle Vernon, and his long-lost brother.

In the end, Vernon and Jody find a common bond. Vernon is able to accept his past and Jody is able to embrace the future. This is an engaging and haunting tale, written in lovely prose.
