WOW!!,
This review is from: Doyle Bramhall II (Audio CD)
This album is incredible. A perfect blend of blues rock and soul. The songs are very well put together. When I discovered this album I bought 2 extra copies just to make sure I always had one.

It's too bad that this thing did not sell because it's fantastic, soulful and sweet. Produced by Wendy and Lisa, this is where Al Green meets Hendrix. I don't know anyone who has listened to this who hasn't just completely freaked out and bought it. "Song From The Grave" will chill you to the bone. Grab it!

After Stevie Ray died many people expected Doyle to step in and "take over" as if he were to spend his career in tribute.
The Arc Angels project showed he was capable of playing with the fire but it wasn't a "blues" album. Instead it showed that songs were going to come first and guitar would be in the mix instead of being the focus. Many thought this album would be where he picked up the torch. Instead Doyle did what he needed to do; to show that he was Doyle Bramhall II and no one else. This album shows the wide variety of textures and styles this gifted writer/singer/player is capable of. If you loved 'Welcome' and/or 'Jelly Cream' you're shorting yourself and not getting the full picture without hearing this album. I think that it's fitting that he's become more closely associated with Eric Clapton than Stevie. He has more in common musically. He has the ability to take a blues/rock feel, phenomenal abilities on guitar (and vocals), and apply it to what would otherwise be pop music. I can't wait for Doyle to take a break from making other people's music better and release some new work. In the meantime check out his web site and see the great discography he's put together over the years.

As the other reviewers of this cd have said, you have to listen to this cd. It's the ultimate Doyle Bramhall II cd. I've long listened to the Doyle's other 2 cd's, as well as his work with Arc Angel, and I've thoroughly enjoyed his blend of rock and blues. After listening to this cd however, I was BLOWN AWAY!!! I just can't stop playing it. My favs on this cd are What You Gonna do, Bleeding from a scratch, Time & Part II. If you like Stevie Ray, Derek Trucks or other artists that play that blend of rock & blues, this cd is a must listen!

This album is FANTASTIC and an excellent debut album for Doyle. As you listed to his other albums after this, he got a little more flashly, but the soul of Doyle is there for ALL OF IT. I love Doyle's guitar playing and his soulful feel in everything he does. He wears his Austin TX influence on his sleeve! A blend of all styles ... rock, blues, jazz, and rippin hendrixy style. Maybe that is why is a coveted session player with the likes on Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, and BB King! They have even covered some of Doyle's songs! Dont dismiss Doyle, he certainly is a diamond in the ruff!

I didn't realize my copy was worth so much! Doyle's finest recording ever-this is such a personal and touching CD. What can you expect from someone that played for the Fabulous Thunderbirds(replacing Jimmy Vaughan),the Arc Angels,Roger Waters, recorded with Stevie... and now Clapton?! I'm going to go back my copy up to a blank CD,but if something happened,I'd pay out the 60 bucks to get a new one...
Get a copy while you can!

It is with no hesitation my declaring this being Doyle Bramhall II's finest musical output. From start to finish, you
will not have an oportunity to press the pause button.I found JELLYCREAM also to be a heartwarming CD with touches of Neil Young in there. On "II" there are also touches of Led Zeppelin III (Check out "Time") and also Lennie Kravitz (On Close to me). Both those songs are totally Top Class. My two favourite tracks are "Reason I live" and "Jealous Sky". The guitar pieces on the last track are absolutely chilling. No wonder you cant get this CD cheaply anywhere on the Internet. |
