Not Kate's most famous, but still magical,
By
This review is from: Two Dozen Roses [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] (Audio CD)
The title appears to be based on one of the songs, One dozen roses, but there are 24 songs here, hence Two dozen roses. These songs are not the ones that Kate is most famous for, but they are an excellent set of songs from her Columbia years. Unlike the 1940-46 collection, this contains a few recordings from the thirties. Here, you will find her covers of many classics of the thirties and forties, including The continental, Imagination, A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square, My melancholy baby, Blues in the night, We'll meet again and The trolley song. When the moon comes over the mountain, another classic, also appears on The Columbia Years 1940-46, but it's the only track on both. On the basis of what I've heard, Kate's recordings were of a consistently high quality, so this collection is every bit as good as any other collection of her music. If you are new to Kate's music, this is an excellent introduction, although you must look elsewhere to find the songs that she is normally remembered for.
