The first thing I noticed with the Dr. Bonner's Shave soap was the smell. The smell reminded me of a saltine cracker. Another reviewer mentioned that it had a nutty smell. I think maybe a nutty saltine would be a good description. The smell itself isn't off putting but just unexpected for a personal grooming product. However, it can linger, and I found myself catching a whiff of it every now and then, especially in the mornings. The scent is just strong enough to make me a little hungry by mid-morning. (Edit: The smell is exactly that of a Ritz cracker to me. My daughter had one the other day, and I thought to myself, "That's it!")
The gel is brown with flecks dark brown something in it. Very organic looking stuff for sure, but the look of it doesn't affect how it works.
Before I tell you how it works for me, I have to tell you about my beard. I have a fairly heavy, stiff beard, so much so that if I don't shave in the shower, I end up with nicks and cuts no matter what I do. I shave close, and I shave against the grain for an even closer shave. So, the first time I used this gel, I cut the heck out of my face. I was used to using very little of the Ballard's oil to achieve a close smooth shave. I almost gave up on Dr. Bonner's at that point; however, I gave it another try the next morning.Read more ›
It really feels smooth and leaves my face feeling soft and less irritated than when I shave with regular gels or creams.
It also has a VERY pleasant sent from the natural ingredients, even though it doesn't have any perfumes or even essential oils.
***** UPDATE 1/28/16 *****
I downgraded this to 3 stars. I've been using this product consistently since my original review and still maintain that it works very well. However, the opening to the last two bottles I've owned got clogged with the gritty pieces, preventing all of the gel from coming out. I can tell there is still a bunch more gel to be used in the bottle but it won't come out! The first time it happened I thought maybe it was just that one bottle, but it's happening again and it's a waste of money. Between that and really looking into the "spaceship Earth" garbage heavily promoted on Dr Bronner's products, I won't be buying this again.

I liked the product itself. Smelled good and foamed up just enough. However, the packaging is horroble. Its more of a liquid gel than a gel and the squeeze tube just does not work. Read morePublished 9 months ago by Vanessa Aleman
