good but only needed for newborns,
By
This review is from: Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set (Baby Product)
I think the Dr. Brown bottles helped because my son did not have a lot of gas but you really only need them for the first 3 months of life for your baby. After 3 months, the baby's intestines have matured and they do not suffer from painful gas anymore. After that, you are stuck cleaning the many parts to this bottle if you buy a ton of them like I did. I would just buy the small bottles for your newborn and then try a bottle that's easier to clean when s/he gets older and needs a larger bottle.

Colic? Gas? Reflux? Fussy? Try these ...,

My son was born 5 weeks early and suffered terribly with acid reflux. I tried other bottles, but these are what worked for us. These bottles cut down on the amount of air my son swallowed in. Less air swallowing meant less burps, which meant less spit up for us!
The bottles are NOT EXTRA work, as some may have you to believe. I have 12 of them, and I simply pop ALL of the parts except the nipples into the dishwasher and everything comes clean with no residue! They are just as easy to clean as any other bottle. At 11 months, my son still uses them and refuses to give them up for his sipppy cups (but that is another issue...LOL) Dr. Brown's customer service is excellent too. When the inner tubing melted in the dishwasher, I emailed them and within a week I had a replacemnt tube sent to me for free.

They really work!,
This review is from: Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set (Baby Product)
I feel a little silly writing a long review on a baby bottle, but I had to write a review about these. We bought most bottles out there for our son - you try to match the nipple shape to the mom if you are breastfeeding. Most bottles claim they help prevent "colic." Most don't, actually. Bottles are a relatively simple thing and they can only really work to prevent colic in a few ways - mechanical or engineered. Bottles fall into a few types - Playtex with liner type, regular old bottles (Gerber, Avent) and Dr. Brown's. The idea to prevent colic is to keep air from getting in the bottle. As baby feeds, the vacuum created in the bottle draws in air through the nipple as is evidence from the bubbles rising up. If baby ingests these bubbles (which they will if they drink the entire bottle) it can tend to cause gas. Bottles like Avent and Gerber do not prevent this problem (the anti-colic is from the latch on to the nipple not in bottle design - a dubious claim in my opinion as I watched bubbles rise up into the pumped milk. The Playtex bottles do but the liners are disposable (and costly over the long run) and those silly vent disk thingys did not work for us. The liners, however, do work as they collapse down as baby sucks and do not seem to allow air back in.
Dr. Brown's bottles, on the other hand, worked exactly as advertised. There are no disposable parts - you just wash everything. They use two extra pieces - a wagon-wheel shaped special vent and a long tube that fits on the vent. The collar that holds the nipple is designed to allow air to flow in from outside, through the wagon-wheel disk and out the tube into the bottle behind all the liquid. This breaks the vacuum and no air gets into the liquid. The system works, and it works very, very well. The bottles come with a small brush as you need to clean out the small tubes in the disk and tube, but it really is not a big deal at all when you are doing dishes by hand (honest). The bottles have never leaked at all and have held up as well as is expected. These bottles are available in narrow and wide - we use the wide because it looks most like Mom. Highly recommended - 5 stars without any reservations.

Best for baby,

After buying one bottle of every brand sold..to find out which would work for my son, I found Dr.Browns to be the absolute BEST! Yes they are a pain to clean with the vents but your baby will not be screaming in pain from gas after eating...really these work! When the vents get nasty I just toss them and buy the replacements..they aren't that expensive!

My son has bad acid reflux so I've tried every type of bottle out there. These are absolutly the best! They have helped with his spitting up and they are all I use anymore! It takes a little longer to clean them but it's well worth it. Would recommend to everyone!

Beware of Lexan plastic,
By New Mom (Ann Arbor, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set (Baby Product)
I bought these bottles because they were compatible with my Medela breast pump and the design got good reviews. We've been using them occasionally for supplementary feedings (formula and expressed milk) for our two-month-old and have no complaints with the performance. However, I recently discovered that studies on mice have shown that polycarbonate plastic (Lexan), like that used in Dr. Brown's bottles, can release a chemical that causes reproductive cancers, low sperm count, birth defects, and other problems. Heating the plastic and long exposure increase the risk. So if you must use these bottles, it seems prudent to add the warm milk/formula just before feeding. I personally am going to pitch mine and switch to polypropylene bottles.

I Like Going With This Flow,
This review is from: Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set (Baby Product)
When our first child was born (she's six now), we had no idea as to what type of bottle to use. Many friends and relatives suggested the highly popular Avent bottles. Based on a few of the reviews here, it looks as if Avent is still pretty popular. However, we had numerous problems with our daughter while she used the Avent brand. She had terrible gas, was difficult to burp, and spit up fairly regularly. When our new son came along, we were given a set of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow bottles as a gift. I was skeptical at first, especially since there were so many parts to clean. However, our son has had absolutely no problems with these bottles. He burps easily, and we've had no flow problems or collapsing nipple problems as others have mentioned.
The bottles are excellent. I don't recommend using a dishwasher to clean these bottles. I've found that handwashing, though a bit tedious, is better. Let's be honest, it's tough to clean EVERY bit of these bottles without using the handy brush that comes with them. As for folks who claim it takes too long to clean them when the baby is hungry, I'd suggest washing the bottles before you run out. I usually wait until my son is down to one bottle and then I wash all of the rest of them. That way I am not always rushing to clean a bottle. As far as the leaking problem that some have mentioned, I only noticed leaks whenever I or my wife didn't have the top firmly on the bottle. I highly recommend these bottles. In a "rush hour" world they might seem tedious when it comes to cleaning, but it's worth it if it makes my child's life a little easier.

Great Bottles,

I love these bottles. Yes they have 2 extra pieces (big deal), but I don't care I didn't want to chance it with my baby. She is 8 weeks today and I have not had a problem with gas or anything of the sort yet - knock on wood. They we recommended to me from a male colleague of mine who was having terrible trouble with his newborn before he decided to switch over. Since than no reported problems - baby is happy. I have never had a problem with leaking either. They are a bit more pricey - but I'll take that over a screaming baby. I suggest getting more of the 8 oz bottles & not spending the money on the smaller ones, they'll grown out of them quickly. I'm also thinking that as she gets older I can omit putting in the 2 extra pieces and save some time. Hope this helps - I based alot of my decision on these reviews and my colleague/friend.

Don't buy anything else!,

These are wonderful bottles. I had a lot of trouble nursing my son in the beginning. (Tip: Learn as much as possible about nursing before you have the baby)! So I started to pump and on a recomendation I used these bottles for the breast milk. Even after six weeks without nursing, he still latched on well, like no time had passed. I believe this partially had something to do with the shape of the bottle nipple. Other than that, the design is ingenious. Cleaning them is not too bad, they come with a special brush for the vent. My sister uses Dr. Brown's bottles as well and would agree with a five star rating as well.

The only bottle my daughters would take!,
By Smart Shopper (MD, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set (Baby Product)
I am a breastfeeding mom and I had a hard time to get either one of my daughters to take a bottle. I tried EVERY bottle out there, and Dr. Brown's bottles seem to be the ONLY bottles my daughters would accept. This may be due to the fact that Dr. Brown's nipples do not collapse when the babies suck, the nipple is perfect shape and size, the flow is consistent and the unique design eliminates the air bubbles, so there's definitely less gas than we experienced while trying other bottles.
I took away one of the stars because of the minor problems we had with this set: these bottles require more time and effort to clean, they leak occasionally [no, I didn't fill them above the line and no, I did not overtighten them - have no idea why they leaked], the larger bottles do not fit in most of the insulated bottle totes that come with diaper bags or sold exclusively for baby bottles [and that was a little bit of a problem for us, because we only use bottles when going places, but we solved it by using a larger/taller insulated lunch bag from Ikea store] and the 4-oz bottles that come in this set will be outgrown pretty quickly. My younger daughter is 7 weeks old and she eats 4 oz per feeding and looks like she could eat more if only the bottle would hold more... I would recommend getting a set of 3 9-oz Dr. Brown's bottles as it looks like a better value and will serve you longer (you can pour as little milk or formula in a 9 oz bottle as you need, while 4 oz bottles will only hold 4 oz max, and will be useless in a couple of months at the latest). |
